The Sixth Sunday after The Epiphany

Ω February 16, 2020 Ω

“Listen to His voice, and hold fast to Him. For the LORD is your life and He will give you many years in the land He swore to give to your fathers.” Deut.30:19f

Welcome: The family of Peace welcomes you as we worship the Lord today. We encourage children to worship with us. If you need to leave with your child, there is a quiet room off the entryway of the church. The rest rooms are located in the basement. Visitors, please sign our guest book on the table outside the sanctuary. We’re glad you are here and pray that in our worship the Lord grants you peace.

“Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD. Blessed are they who keep His statutes and seek Him with all their heart. You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed. I will praise You ...as I learn Your righteous laws” (Psalm 119).

The Lord Is Your Life. You have heard it said…but I tell you…..” Four times Jesus uses that phrase in today’s Gospel Lesson. What does He mean by it? His use of it indicates that people may say one thing, but He has something else to say about it. And He always speaks divine truth! We need to hear and then see things His way.

That which holds a person back from seeing things clearly the way Jesus sees them is the Old Adam within. In fact no one would know anything about God and His saving will if God did not reveal it. On our own, we just can’t see it. Thankfully He has not left us in the dark, but enlightens us. The Holy Spirit opens our eyes to see Him and His saving truths. So listen and live by what He says because the Lord is your life.

To that end we pray: Lord God, in mercy receive the prayers of Your people. Open our hearts to see You in truth. Grant us the wisdom to know the things that please You and the grace and power always to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Old Testament Lesson: Deuteronomy 30:15-20

Moses sets before Israel the alternatives of obedience or disobedience to God’s commands. God presented the path to “life, prosperity and blessing” so that the nation about to enter Canaan might avoid “death, destruction, and curse.” Neutrality is not possible. “Choose life!”

The Epistle Lesson: 1 Corinthians 2:6-13

Under inspiration by the Holy Spirit, Paul declares that “the message of the cross,” is God’s word of wisdom. In his foolish wisdom man does not accept or understand it. Only God the Spirit can reveal its meaning to us.

The Gospel Lesson: Matthew 5:21-37

Jesus teaches that the commandments are not directed only to man’s actions, but to the attitudes within. Watch out for anger, lust, and unfaithfulness. Desire reconciliation. The Lord is your life. Walk in Him.

Out of deep love for the truth of God’s Word and precious souls, we follow the practice of Close Communion in our congregation. This has been the practice of Christians for centuries and reflects the Bible’s teaching on unity of faith in the reception of the Supper (1 Cor.10:17). It does not judge a person’s heart but anticipates agreement in that which God says. Since we do not wish to put anyone in the position of declaring such agreement with us before study in the Word is possible, we ask that only those who are communicant members of this or another Wisconsin Synod or ELS congregation come to receive the Sacrament.

Today’s Organist: Judy Bertoldie

Today’s Preacher: Pastor Edwin Lehmann

Point to Ponder: “In order to grasp this matter (our righteousness must go beyond what we can do), I am in the habit of imagining that there is no quality in my heart which is called faith or love. Instead, I put Christ in its place and say, ‘He is my Righteousness!’ I do so in order to free myself from looking to the Law for righteousness or from regarding Christ as merely a Teacher or Giver of knowledge. Rather, I want Him to be my Gift and my Doctrine in His person, so that I have everything in Him. He is my life!”
