Course Description

The fundamental purpose of the course of Geometry is to formalize and extend students' geometric experiences from the middle grades. Students explore more complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of geometric relationships, moving towards formal mathematical arguments.

This course will use the concepts of geometry and the skills of algebra to solve real world problems. Students will learn how geometric proofs are developed and how to construct proofs based on various theorems, postulates, corollaries and definitions. By the end of the course, the students will have achieved the necessary skills to advance to Algebra 2 Honors.

Course Prerequisites

Proficiency in Algebra 1.

Course Objectives

Through the successful completion of Geometry Honors, students will be able to

• use both inductive and deductive reasoning which leads to critical reasoning

• prove basic theorems and prove triangle congruence and similarity

• apply geometric knowledge in solving "real-world" problems modeled with geometric figures

• use properties of geometric figures to determine equations and solve for unknown dimensions of the figures

Other Course Information

There is a focus on vocabulary needed to better understand mathematics, and how the mathematical definition can relate to other courses. The student will not only be required to apply knowledge to real-world problems, but also explain how to solve problems in sentence and paragraph form. The student will also learn to access background knowledge and apply it to new topics.

A variety of assessments will be used throughout the school year. There will be multiple choice, basic computation, and extended response, including written explanations. The students are expected to follow proper grammar and punctuation rules and use correct spelling. There may also be vocabulary quizzes and tests.

Grading

This course uses weighted averages!

Course work will be weighted as follows: Homework 10%

Quizzes 30%

Tests 60%

Semester grades will be averaged using Quarter 1 or 3 35%

the following weights. County Grade Matrix Quarter 2 or 4 35%

will be used. FSA Exam 30%

Note that semester one grade will not be present until FSA has been scored.

The student can access his/her grade in FOCUS at any time. Grades will be updated at least every two weeks.

Course Procedures and Policies

This is a lecture style course where a new concept will be introduced every one to two days. Notes and examples will be provided, and then a time for Guided Practice. Continuous review will happen automatically since new concepts depend on previously learned information. Homework will be provided for each concept and will be due the following class. Quizzes will be given often based on the day’s lesson.

Math is learned through practice. It is recommended that the student set aside a specific time every day to go over the lesson, complete any homework and to review. A neat and organized notebook will aid in the learning process.

← PHONES are to be turned off and placed in receptacle by the door upon entering the classroom.

← Students are expected to be on time (in the classroom) and prepared for every class.

← No food or drinks in the classroom. (Plain water is okay)

← Stay seated during class unless directed otherwise.

← Sharpen your pencil before class.

← Talk only when appropriate (no talking during quiz, test or teaching time).

← Raise your hand if you have something to say or if you need help.

← The only electronic device allowed to be used during class is a calculator, only a calculator, and nothing but a calculator. A phone or other device will not be accepted as a calculator.

← ALL ASSESSMENTS ARE TO BE DONE IN PENCIL. Ink will not be accepted on quizzes/tests.

← Quizzes will be given often and without warning. If a quiz is missed, the grade will be excused.

← If tests are missed, they must be made up the following Tuesday after school.

← Assignments are due at the beginning of class; late assignments will NOT be accepted. If you are absent, you have 2 days to make up the assignment.

← While there is not a set schedule for extra assistance, the student is welcome, and encouraged, to stop by my classroom before or after school as needed. Pearson Realize (online textbook) is our go to resource. Other resources include Khan Academy.

← Progress updates are mid-way through the quarter according to a schedule set by the school. Student grades are also accessible through FOCUS.

← All Charlotte County Public School and CHS policies will be followed.

← Please read the Student Code of Conduct.

← If an absence is unexcused, 30% will be deducted from make-up assignment grade (hw and test).

← On 3rd and subsequent tardies, action will be taken by the Discipline Office.

← Students out of Dress Code will be sent to the Dean.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

At all times give every task your best effort.
