This full-day session explores pediatric dysphagia, specifically feeding assessment and techniques for infants, as well as behavioral dysphagia. You will leave with activities that you can immediately use with your patients to improve their feeding skills.

In this presentation, we will discuss evaluation and treatment techniques for infant dysphagia. Other aspects of dysphagia in infants will also be discusses, such as supplemental feeds, aspiration, positioning, thickening liquids, and objective assessments. We will review nipple/bottle selection, as well as characteristics of the nipples, flow rates, and change to change nipples.

This presentation will also focus on the behavioral aspects of pediatric Dysphagia, including etiologies, a team approach, types of aversions and their effects, components of the evaluation for a child with behavioral Dysphagia, with different options for goal writing and determining frequency of treatment. Through case analysis and video case examples, participants will develop tools for intervention strategies that can be utilized in therapeutic feeding sessions. Specific interventions will be reviewed, including evidence based interventions. These intervention and therapeutic strategies will be demonstrated through video examples. Follow-up process after the evaluation and/or intensive feeding program are completed will also be discussed, as well as common misperceptions about behavioral interventions and why some interventions fail.

Pediatric FEES versus MBS, infant assessment, cervical auscultation, and infant dysphagia techniques. Behavioral dysphagia will begin to be discussed, specifically etiologies, team approach, food aversions, and picky eater versus eating disorder.

Outcomes Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Identify nipple/bottle options, their flow rate, and when to change nipples. 2. Thickening recipes, as well as feeding techniques for infants. 3. Identify differences between MBS vs FEES. 4. Identify etiologies/diagnoses associated with pediatric behavioral Dysphagia. 5. Complete evaluation and goal writing for a child with a behavioral Dysphagia. 6. Implement behavioral strategies and techniques for working with children who have food aversions and

other maladaptive behaviors surrounding food/liquid.

Speaker Biography Gina DiSalvatore Longarzo, MS, CCC-SLP is a Senior Speech-Language Pathologist at Blythedale Children's Hospital (BCH). She received her Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology from New York Medical College. Gina currently holds various/leadership positions at Blythedale regarding Dysphagia, including managing a Feeding Team, liaison to Infant/Toddler unit, and lead Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) clinician, having conducted over 25 pediatric FEES and present for over 50 pediatric FEES, including reviewing videos and report writing. She also co-created the FEES program at Blythedale Children's Hospital. Gina also has over 11 years of experience with assessing and treating behavioral dysphagia in the pediatric population.
