PURPOSEThe Larger Project. As we collectively address complex social issues in our community, we have an opportunity to engage with individuals who have direct insight and lived experience but are often left behind or ignored. With increasing understanding of historical and generational trauma, we must take the time to build trust through safe and healing spaces for authentic relationships within communities who have been disenfranchised. By supporting a framework for “Peer Support Groups,” we can co-create a pipeline of community leaders and a thriving community.A “Peer Support Group” will comprise 8–12 families experiencing multiple barriers (e.g., living in subsidized housing; parents with kids who have chronic absences, suspensions, or expulsions; families with frequent visits to urgent care/ER/911 calls; families with a DHS referral; families with Handle With Care referrals from school partners; families recovering from substance use, accessing predatory lenders, recently released from prison, etc.).II. _______________ (partner agency agrees to one or more of the following):Provide a safe location for a group meeting two hours a week for 16–18 weeks (greater frequency increases critical social connectedness). The location should have a large room where 8–12 families can eat a meal together and where the parents meet after the meal. Provide childcare during meetings, ideally with trauma-informed childcare specialists.Provide attendees transportation to location if needed.Provide a meal during the group meetings.Provide a stipend to all Peer Support Group attendees for each group meeting.Provide technology needed for virtual Peer Support Group; see Appendix A.Coordinate with two trained co-facilitators who are trusted by the community, such as case managers, home visitors, peer recovery support specialists, family support providers, community health workers, patient navigators, social workers, family advocates, parent partners, parents as teachers, community attorneys, municate weekly the date and time for each Peer Support Group meeting.Identify and utilize an evidence-based or promising practice curriculum to guide open conversations about exploring community resources, addressing barriers, goal setting, and improving stability outcomes (e.g., Getting Ahead).Create ongoing “Staying Ahead” opportunities; monthly or quarterly meetings for graduates; connect with mentors and additional resources as requested; recruit graduates to community boards and advisory committees to improve community outcomes.Provide training for co-facilitators.Identify flex funds to address emergency needs of support group participants to continue building trust and support their journeys to stability and recovery (housing/utilities support, boxes of food, activities for the kids, tech support, etc.). Partnership with legal aid servicesWrite collaborative grants for sustainability.III. ______________ (partner agency agrees to one or more of the following):Provide a safe location for a group meeting two hours a week for 16–18 weeks (greater frequency increases critical social connectedness).
