My goal in writing this book is for my pen to be my voice.”Bary, the center of a national and international media frenzy in 2009-2010, said she wrote the book in order to give the actual details of her untold story; how she fled her home in the middle of the night to find the freedom to worship as she pleased, and to possibly save her own life, and the long, court battle and numerous foster-care situations that ensued. “As often happens, many of the news reports centered on speculation and untruths,” said Bary. “This book fulfills my desire to give an accurate account of my personal experiences within my family and community.” “Hiding in the Light” is the story of Bary’s life, from childhood in Sri Lanka and the accident that caused the blindness in her right eye, to being molested as a child, which would cause shame to her Muslim family if anyone found out, and the subsequent move to America to allegedly find medical attention for her now blind eye. Once in America, Bary recounts memories of the hardships of her childhood, and the on-going search for something, or someone, to save her from her situation—ultimately her newfound Christian faith. In “Hiding in the Light,” Bary tells of a friend’s invitation to a Christian church and how Bary found her faith in Jesus, and the courage to withstand what was happening at home. Throughout the exchange with her friends, or stories of learning the tenants of the Christian faith, Bary walks the reader through comparisons of the Christian faith and the Islamic faith she grew up with, from her first slice of pepperoni pizza, previously considered unclean to her, to the ability to pray in English instead of Arabic, a language she never understood, but was required to use in her daily Muslim prayers. Once Bary’s faith was discovered by her parents and later by the local mosque, Bary recounts how she felt threatened and feared for her life and ultimately, and miraculously, fled to Florida for safety. In the midst of her multi-state battle for security and freedom, then 17-year-old Bary was diagnosed with a rare uterine cancer, and has since been found to be in remission. “I live today in spiritual freedom,” Bary said, “able to worship Jesus without restraint or apology.
