 Winter Semester Information

Venue

For the winter 2022 semester, we will offer in-person and Zoom courses. Courses are listed in chronological

order. Please take note whether a course is in-person or via Zoom.

In-person courses will take place on the Penn State York campus in the OLLI classroom, room 31B/C,

in the Main Classroom Building, Conference Center. A campus map is on the last page of this catalog.

Zoom courses or online social event links will be emailed to you the day before your course.

Fees

The fee for all single-session courses is $8 for members and nonmembers. Winter semester is a great time to

bring a friend and allow them to experience OLLI at the discounted member price!

Registration

Registration opens for members and nonmembers on Monday, December 13. You can register online or

complete the Course Registration Form at the end of this catalog and mail to the address on the form.

Cancelation

Refunds for courses will be given in the form of credit only, no cash. Credit will only be given if you call the

office at least one week before the start of the course. For a refund, multi-session courses must be canceled for

all sessions. Cancelation (with refund) for particular sessions is not allowed. At the end of each semester, all

credits will be refunded back to you. If you registered with a credit card, you will receive a refund soon after

you cancel a course. If you paid by check, you will receive a check after the semester ends.

Wait List

If you cannot attend a course for which you are registered, please call and let us know so we may add someone

from the wait list. If you are on a wait list and a seat opens, our office will email and call the first on the list. If

we do not get a response in 48 hours, we will call the next person on the list.

Inclement Weather

It is your responsibility to check the following if there is inclement weather:

In the event of a two-hour delay, an email will be sent to all 11:00 a.m. course registrants informing

them if the instructor is holding the course. If you don¡¯t have email, the OLLI office will call you.

Illness

If you have an active cold or cough, please stay home and take care of yourself. If you have a fever or have

knowingly been exposed to anyone who has tested positive for COVID, you must cease from coming to OLLI

courses for two weeks. Thank you for keeping us all safe so that we can continue to meet in person!

Book Club: The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife,

Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he

butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the

mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold

in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn't seen or heard from in twenty years.

Creating and Publishing Web Maps

With the proliferation of free and easy-to-use digital map creation

apps available through the internet, the creation of web maps is

rapidly becoming a fun and affordable hobby. This course will

teach the fundamentals of creating interesting and informative web

maps using apps such as Google maps and ArcGIS Online.

Hot Spots Around the World

These two ninety-minute discussions will look at some of the troubled areas of the

world. We will talk about the history of the issues in question and examine the

implications of these problems for their region and the world. We will discuss the

social, political and environmental implications where appropriate. Examples from all

continents will be presented.

Personal Narrative Workshop: The Art of First-Person Storytelling

Storytelling is a wonderful way to get to know your neighbors - to uncover things

we have in common, and to recognize and better understand our differences. In

this workshop, we'll discuss the structure of good stories, build off of prompts to

generate ideas for stories, and learn to develop true, personal stories around

everyday experiences and life lessons we've learned. Please bring a notebook and

pen for writing prompts.

Boroughs of York County (Repeat of the in-person fall 2021 course)

Are you familiar with Franklintown, Yorkana and New Salem boroughs?

Class members will go on a whirlwind tour via PowerPoint of the

boroughs of York County. We¡¯ll visit all thirty-six boroughs ¨C and a

sampling of unincorporated villages in our thirty-five townships ¨C talking

about what put them on the map and what they¡¯re known for today. This

survey is designed to whet your appetite to visit these sometimes obscure

but always interesting towns that help make York County, York County.

A Brief History of the Blues

The musical style known as "the blues" is

wrapped into almost all other styles of American popular music. From

folk to country to jazz to rock, the structure and feel of the blues has

permeated thousands of songs recorded by hundreds of artists. This

course is a brief overview of its evolution, structure, lyrics, various substyles, and the artists who influenced its development along the way.

The Parthenon and the Acropolis

The ancient Greeks left a rich legacy in art and architecture with the

Parthenon serving as the epitome of the classical moment. We will discuss

the cultural context and the structure of this monument, presented as the

academic standard of architecture for centuries. The Porch of the Maidens

and the Temple of Athena Nike on the Acropolis will also be shown.
