Thirty-one recipients were recognized, and CAPT Maxine Goodridge, USN, Commanding Officer of Naval Air Technical Training Center was Guest Speaker. CAPT Goodridge encouraged all to "show up better than you were yesterday." Kudos to Mark Curley and Bill Cuilik, for their leadership in organizing this event.
Military Spouse Appreciation Luncheon, spearheaded by Harry White and Bob Anderson, took place May 24th, with twenty-five spouses recognized. Guest speaker Amy Cozad shared humorous and inspiring anecdotes regarding the many roles the military spouse fulfills. In the spirit of the theme, recognition is the reward for all who serve as the other half of the home team. Sue Straughn served as Mistress of Ceremonies. Navy Federal Credit Union and Pen Air Federal Credit Union, as always, supported these events with gift bags and monetary contributions.
The USCG Cutter DECISIV E was welcomed to Pensacola with banners and gift bags, in anticipation of the Cutter and her crew's being homeported in Pensacola. CDR Jose Martis assumed command of the ship June 11th, relieving CDR Blake Novak. CDR Martis averred that all are delighted to become part of our local community. Gerald McGill provided banners which were also used to welcome the crew of the USCG Cutter DA UNTLESS, when she and her crew arrived on July 10th. Navy League is charged with incorporating these groups into our sphere and supporting them during their stay among us.
At the 2018 National Navy League Conference in Portland, Oregon, the Pensacola Navy League was granted the "MACKIE AWARD" for excellence in Social Media (Carol Monroe, manager of the Facebook page deserves applause, along with Kevin Miller). At the Council Awards Luncheon the Pensacola Council was recognized as one of twelve Outstanding Navy League Councils, a testament to the good work done by Pensacola Navy League members over many years. The Pensacola Council was also recognized for excellence in Social Media, garnering a Third Place Mackie Award recognition among medium councils.
Evening social events dovetailed with Portland's Rose Festival and Fleet Week which included port visits by the USCG cutter Steadfast, patrol boat Orcas, and Royal Canadian Navy frigate Regina and coastal defense vessel Nanaimo.
The convention was an excellent opportunity to see how Navy League benefits our sea services, to catch up with shipmates, and to meet our outstanding men and women in uniform there to receive deserved recognition.
Consider attending a future convention, and the Sea Air Space Exposition held each spring.

USCG CUTTERS RELOCATE TO PENSACOLA
T he Pensacola Council welcomed the crews of the USCG Cutter Decisive (W MEC-629), a 210-foot cutter and the Coast Guard Cutter Dauntless (W MEC624), a 210-foot cutter when they relocated to Pensacola in June and July.
Each cutter boasts a crew of 76 coast guardsmen who conduct a variety of Coast Guard missions, including counter drug enforcement, alien migration interdiction operations, search and rescue and maritime law enforcement.
The cutters will be home-ported at NAS Pensacola, along with the USCG Cutter Cypress (W LB-210).
By Jim Crumlish, Community Liaison for the Sea Cadets
D uring each monthly two-day drill period, Sea Cadets of Pensacola's Independence Squadron, continue to conduct Military Training requirements, and frequently engage in challenging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program activities. Often, Sea Cadets participate in various community services, including beach cleanup, color guard for Navy League and other community events. Earning advancement in rank is a planned goal for all cadets. Officers and volunteer instructors (civilian and military) mentor cadets as they progress with individual plans.
The May 2018 drill period included planning and preparation for Sea Cadets' annual Summer Camp, generally a week or two away from home, for military and other purposes. A special lecture on Nuclear Fusion met with attentive interest of all cadets. The easy to understand STEM training was presented by the Sea Cadet's Executive Officer, CAPT Curtis Duncan, who recently commanded a nuclear submarine. Sea Cadets later joined other local youth groups for the annual 5K run, organized by St. John's Catholic Church on Navy Boulevard. The new Independence Squadron flag was introduced at the run event.
June drill engaged all League and Sea Cadets in a Sunfish Sailing Regatta, exploiting their recently earned sailing certifications. Part of the exercise involved dumping the boats and safely recovering to sailing condition. On that bright, sunny Saturday, the swimming part was a welcome extra. Four new recruits joined the squadron during the regatta.
Sunday's study for exams was followed by ceremonies in the Atrium of the National Museum of Naval Aviation. Two graduated Seniors, CPO Mary Beth Geary and PO2 Josh Conrad, were presented with shadow-boxed memorabilia and bid "Farewell and Following Seas". Cadet Conrad took the mike and captured the audience with his unique observations of his just completed Fleet Week involvement, as the squadron's representative.
To recognize the extensive two year contributions of the unit's departing Executive Officer, the Navy League Pensacola Council President, Nan Harper, presented CAPT Curtis Duncan with a beautifully framed certificate. Sea Cadet Liaison Jim Crumlish, read a glowing Citation of this modest officer's influences with the Independence Squadron.
The Command Master Chief of NAS Pensacola, CMDCM Mario Rivers, has enthusiastically committed to providing support to our Sea Cadet program, and has already taken steps to protect our rights to the new Sea Cadet facility on the edge of the Naval Air Technical Training Center Campus. Sea Cadets expect to complete the move in July 2018.
The July drill found the Sea Cadets engaging with WWII veterans, to hear their stories, while they prepared to fly in a collection of antique WWII Stearman trainers during the Blue Angel's dress rehearsal show over Pensacola Beach. This Vets' event is organized annually by regional businessman, Roy Kinsey, and his N2S Stearman aircraft and Stearman-owner friends. "Yellow Perils" forever!
