I. Our Bland Mission Trip was a great blessing to the 13 volunteers from our association who took part and we pray we were a blessing to many persons. Our team did construction work on many sites, conducted food ministry and clothes ministry, worked in the dental clinic, cut grass and did many other things during the week of May 15 – 21. We thank our association for your prayers and financial support of Bland Ministries.

II. More Than Nets – We are so very grateful for the $550 offering at our spring meeting for More Than Nets. This money will provide nets to protect 55 families in Ghana from mosquitos and also share the Gospel with them.

IV. Our next Operation InAsMuch endeavor will take place on Saturday, September 24. Please begin now to plan some very helpful projects to carry out and let Valeria Breault know, along with the name of your contact person.

V. Our Stop Hunger Now Packaging Project at the Maysille Multi-Purpose Center on Sunday, May 1, was a tremendous success with 174 persons from 14 JRB churches, and 2 other churches, packing 33,073 meals. Our meals will feed many hungry children in Haiti. Sincere thanks to each person who gave money for Stop Hunger Now and to each of you who helped package the meals. Let us begin now to set aside money each week for our next Stop Hunger Now packaging event!

JRBA Stop Hunger Now Meal Packing Event

May 1, 2016

On Sunday, May 1, 2016, the James River Baptist Association hosted its eighth Stop Hunger Now Meal Packing Event at Maysville Baptist Multi-Purpose Center. 174 volunteers of all ages from 16 area churches packed, weighed, and sealed 33,073 meals to help feed hungry children in the schools and an orphanage in Haiti. Our churches and individuals raised $9,091.14. This was supplemented by $500.00 from the Baptist General Association of Virginia (Virginia Baptists). Since 2010, JRBA has packaged 186,869 meals at a cost of $48,800.65 to help feed the hungry in Haiti, Uganda, the Philippines, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, Cambodia, and the Ivory Coast.

The meals, consisting of soy, rice, dehydrated vegetables, and vitamins, are purchased at 29ȼ per meal and packaged six meals to a bag. Everyone had a good time and worked hard at the event to bless others around the world with a nutritious meal.

Mission Trip to Bland Ministry Center

May 15 – 21

TEAM MEMBERS

Jason Ballowe & Dana Powers-Hamner (Cedar)

Nancy Morris (Chestnut Grove)

Henry and Dixie Wood, Rev. Jimmy Dunn, & Thelma Childress

(First Baptist Dillwyn)

Agnes Davis (Mt. Tabor)

Dorothy Davis & Brenda McAllister (Mt. Zion)

Gwynn & Phyllis Tyler (Mulberry Grove)

Audrey Ragland (Sharon)

The team met at FBC on Sunday, May 15, to depart for Bland County. Items collected for the Ministry Center were loaded on Henry’s trailer. JRBA collected thousands of plastic shopping bags, 85 jars of peanut butter, Campbell’s soup labels, 54 packs of dental floss, 35 reams of copy paper, 42 pairs of men’s jeans/pants, Six packs of men’s underwear, 7 toothbrushes and one toothpaste. Additionally, Dr. Wes Saxon donated 72 packs of dental floss and Buckingham Family Dentistry donated 144 packs. Individuals from Mt. Tabor, Sharon, and Mt. Zion donated money to help the team with meals. Cedar, First Baptist Dillwyn (Helping Hands), and Mt. Zion donated funds to the Bland Blue Envelope project to help buy building materials. JRBA donated $500 (2015-2016 budget), $250 to the Blue Envelope Project and $250 to the Dental Clinic.

The team members served in various capacities during the week. Jimmy, Gwynn, Brenda, Audrey, and Thelma worked at the Ministry Center. They mowed grass and helped clean up after the construction crew, unloaded about 6,200 pounds of food and a trailer load of clothing that came in to the warehouse. The ladies shelved food in the food warehouse and helped ready the boxes for distribution on Tuesday. All of them assisted with the food distribution. They also helped with the Clothes Closet, unpacking, sorting, and repacking the clothes that came in on the truck. About 80 families received food and clothing during the week.

The construction team, Henry, Dixie, Dana, Jason, Dorothy, and Agnes, completed four big projects out in the community. They built handicapped ramps at four homes. They worked hard and were blessed by the appreciation of the homeowners. One of the gentlemen for whom a ramp was built was a double amputee. They also installed a new stove in the volunteer house.

Nancy and Phyllis worked in the dental clinic Monday through Thursday. Nancy served as a dental assistant and also sterilized instruments. Phyllis worked as a receptionist, checking patients in, pulling and filing charts, and coding the dental work that was done. The services offered by the clinic have increased dramatically since the Bland Dental Clinic has partnered with the Bland Medical Clinic and are now receiving grants. There have been some changes to their operation. Patients from Bland and Wythe counties are now asked to make a co-payment of $10/visit . Those from other counties are asked to make an initial payment of $15 and then pay on a sliding scale for all services. Not only does the clinic now operate every Monday – Thursday, but they also have a hygienist and a person to make dentures on those days, too. Denture cost to Bland and Wythe patients is $50/full set and $25/partial set. Patients from other counties pay on a sliding scale (usually about $125/full set and $75/partial set). This clinic is making a tremendous difference in dental care for needy patients. During the week, 78 patients were seen and treated. The dentist did 42 fillings, 2 root canals, and extracted a root tip. 6 patients received partial or full sets of dentures. The hygienist cleaned 26 patients’ teeth, instructed them on proper dental care, and gave them toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss. Total cost of services provided was approximately $25,000 - $28.000.

Everyone shared kitchen duty, bringing food and helping with preparation and cleanup. Thelma always washed dishes, much to the delight of everyone else! The team ate out part of the time and appreciated the donations that helped provide for these outings. Several team members volunteered to do devotions in the evening, providing a time of bonding around God’s word and a time of sharing the blessings of the day. Everyone got along well and was blessed to help many folks while in Bland. The fellowship was wonderful and the opportunity to share God’s love through word and deed was meaningful to everyone on the team. The team extends THANKS to everyone who contributed items or money for the trip and to all who prayed for the team and its ministry. A special THANK YOU to Henry and Dixie Wood for providing their trailer to carry everything needed for the week as well as the donated items.

CHURCH OUTREACH>>>

[pic]

Angela Bishop, Jenni Clore, and Laura Vogt, Antioch (Scottsville) were on a mission trip to Honduras from May 21 – 29. They assisted with building a church.

Antioch’s outreach at Old Farm Day on May 7 was a big success. They gave out over 1,000 bottles of cold water with the church’s logo. They had balloons with the logo, stickers, children’s games, books and Bibles. Old Farm Day was held at Pleasant Grove near Palmyra in Fluvanna County.

Cedar’s choir members and other church family members were blessed to visit the residents at Heritage Hall Nursing Home on Wednesday, April 27. They sang songs and fellowshipped with the residents. Cedar gave $355 to the Bland Ministry Center’s Blue Envelope Project to purchase building materials for those needing home repairs and/or handicapped ramps.

Helping Hands of First Baptist Dillwyn gave $500 to the Bland Ministry Center’s Blue Envelope Project.

Mt. Zion made several monetary donations to various mission efforts during May: their Baptist men gave $200 to Bland Ministry Center; WMU gave $75 to Bland Blue Envelope Project, gave $100 to the JRBA offering for More Than Nets, gave $100 to Kristen Jones who is taking their dresses to Guatemala, and gave $100 to Laura Vogt who is taking dresses to Honduras. A donation of $100 was given by a member to help with the Bland Mission Team expenses.

Mulberry Grove brought in school supplies for the Jones Chapel mission trip to West Virginia. Individuals contributed wipes, note pads, and toiletry items as well as other items for a Mother’s Day visit to Heritage Hall Nursing Home. On April 30, several members made a trip to Glenn Memorial Baptist Church in Prospect for the Potato Drop, returning with 1000 pounds of potatoes. The potatoes were distributed to numerous families in Buckingham. It was a wet day, but a very worthwhile project that was a blessing to many. Many hands helped with the distribution. A big THANK YOU to Glenn Memorial for orchestrating this wonderful opportunity. Contributions for Standing Rock and the Jones Chapel mission trip will be the focus in June.

Sharon is currently focusing on the collection of new socks and underwear to be delivered by Virginia Baptist mission teams to boys and girls of Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation in North and South Dakota. Rose of Sharon continues visiting and delivering soup to those who are sick or homebound, and collecting religious study material for donation to the prison ministry.

JRBA Learns and Grows>>>

Several members of Antioch (Scottsville) attended a Church Security training session in Charlottesville on May 16.

Gladstone Memorial will begin a series of messages on “Rebuilding the Old Gospel Bridge” in June. Everyone is invited to come out.

184th Semi-Annual Spring Meeting

James River Baptist Association

The 184th Semi-Annual Spring Meeting was held on Thursday, May 12, 2016, at Antioch Union Baptist Church. Folks gathered in the sanctuary while viewing slides from the recent Stop Hunger Now Meal Packing Event. Mrs. Lynn Perkins, Antioch Union’s Deacon Chair, gave a welcome and announcements. A brief report on Antioch’s (Scottsville) recent Flint Water Project was presented by Rev. Dave Vogt. Melissa Wagner was convicted about doing missions locally so when the contaminated water issue in Flint, MI, came up, she felt compelled to help. Over 100,000 residents were in need of water, baby wipes, and hand sanitizers. Melissa and her husband, Daniel, began a fundraising drive and were able to purchase 18,000 bottles of water and 50 packs of baby wipes. Eight folks made the trip to Flint to deliver the items to a local church for distribution. The timing was perfect as they had just run out of water! Dave thanked JRBA for their support of this mission endeavor. Rev. Jimmy Dunn then gave a Missions Committee Report. He noted the success of the Stop Hunger Now effort this spring. JRBA raised $9,591.14 including the $500 contributed from the Baptist General Association of Virginia and the $894 raised at the Chris Lewis Benefit Concert. He also commented on the wonderful meal packing event held on May 1. He expressed appreciation for the use of the Maysville Multi-Purpose Center and to everyone who participated. This was our largest meal packing event yet with 174 volunteers coming out to do “hands on” missions together.

Jimmy also mentioned the BGAV More Than Nets effort for which the evening’s offering is designated. More Than Nets set out to provide 100,000 nets to the Yendi region of Ghana and to plant new churches there, as well as to share the Gospel message. To date, the occurrence of malaria has been reduced by 43%, 67,000 nets have been provided, over 200 new churches have been planted, and over 4,000 new converts have been baptized! Our offering will help to meet the goal of this important mission effort. Jimmy also asked that we pray for the Bland Mission Team and expressed his appreciation for the items donated. He commended the churches who have taken, and are planning to take, summer mission trips. Mrs. Perkins then gave the blessing for the fellowship meal.

The ladies of Antioch Union prepared and served a delicious meal of spaghetti, salad, and bread, along with a variety of scrumptious homemade desserts. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the food and fellowship around the table.

After the meal, everyone gathered in the sanctuary for worship. Kaye Cowan was the pianist for the service. Marilyn Snoddy, Moderator, called the meeting to order and made some brief comments. She mentioned the new pastors who have come to JRBA since

9

October: Rev. Richard Tuttle (Jones Chapel), Rev. Wayne

Proffitt (Enon), Rev. Geoffrey Bruschi (Arvon), and Dr. Don Campbell (Interim – Mt. Zion). Dr. Campbell was in attendance and was recognized. In Marilyn’s written report, she noted the blessings of our Stop Hunger Now event, our support of Virginia Baptist disaster relief to tornado victims in VA, sharing the Good News at the high school baccalaureates, our contribution to the Flint Water Project, the volunteer missionaries from our churches to India, Honduras, SE Asia, and El Salvador, our upcoming mission trip to Bland along with monetary and other donations, and our support of More Than Nets. She mentioned our upcoming Operation InAsMuch Missions Blitz planned for September 24 and encouraged every church to get involved. Mt. Zion is planning a revival service at the close of the day and she asked that another church volunteer to hold a praise rally the Sunday evening before. Marilyn also challenged us to pack more OCC shoeboxes this year than ever before!

Frank Breault, Clerk, had the roll call of churches. There were 40 in attendance, representing 10 member churches. Next Rev. Michael Khol, Missions Committee Co-Chair, gave an update on our Hispanic Ministry and his recent Church Communications Outreach. Michael noted that he has visited 9 of the 18 churches to have conversations about our association. He feels that JRBA is healthy and strong, but would like to see even more of our people involved. He asked that the other churches contact him for a time to come. He is in the process of planning a Softball Game/Picnic event for the summer. Details will be sent out once a field is obtained. He encouraged folks to come out to play or cheer! It will be a great time of fun and fellowship. In his written report, he updated us on the Hispanic Ministry, noting that bi-lingual Bible Study is continuing on Thursday nights at FBC. He is also leading a Spanish worship service with 20–30 Hispanics at the Buckingham Correctional Facility on Sunday evenings. He is grateful for the opportunity to participate in this ministry. Marilyn then presented the Slate of Officers for 2016-2017 from the Nominating Committee. It was approved as presented.

Everyone joined in the singing of Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee. Then we were blessed by special music by Nathaniel and Marcus Fraticelli and Deanna Burkett. They sang There Is a Place Only Love Can Grow. An offering of $550 was collected for More Than Nets. Then Dr. Don Campbell led us in a Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer. The Fraticelli brothers and Deanna then presented two more musical selections, Amazing Grace and This I Know. Rev. Dave Vogt, Antioch, then came to give the evening message. He thanked JRBA for their support of the mission trips from Antioch and gave a bit of his own personal journey into the ministry.

Rev. Vogt read Romans 11:36 –12:2 and led in prayer. He noted that we are to be living sacrifices to God in every aspect of our lives because of all that God has done for us. Good intentions are not enough. True belief results in action. Real Christianity: Do because we are supposed to, not because we feel like it. We must offer everything to God – mind, body, and spirit. We should only exist to serve God by serving others. Our resources may run out, but God’s mercy never runs out. Because of His grace, we must offer all we are. We must have words and deeds if we are to serve sacrificially. Sometimes God wants us to do things a new way (worship) – it shouldn’t be about contemporary or traditional – it should be about praising God for who He is and what He has done for us! The message is the same, but the method may be different. Our worship is not about the music, but about seeking His spirit and allowing it to work in our lives. We also need to reflect worship in our lives: extending forgiveness, loving others, glorifying God! We must be transformed by renewing of our minds. We have the Holy Spirit so that we can lead Godly lives – we need renewed vision of His mercy and His salvation. Our main job is to proclaim the cross of Jesus Christ – that is why we serve. We need to daily renew our spirit through the reading of God’s word. It will remind us of what God has done and what He wants us to do. God’s word keeps us calibrated. Reading the Bible is not a matter of time; it is a matter of priority. We should always be asking for more of the Holy Spirit to lead us and bring the Word to life for us. God doesn’t ask us to do anything that is contradicted in His word. Discover God’s will by believing, praying, going, and telling! We will discover His will through action. God doesn’t usually lead you to a new place unless you are faithful where you are. Discover His will by seeking Him and being active. He gave His all for us…our only reasonable response is to give all we are into being/doing what He called us to do.

After the singing of Softly and Tenderly, Marilyn led in the benediction.

OTHER EVENTS>>>

Young people of Antioch (Scottsville) are working on a float to be used in the July 4th parade in Scottsville.

On May 14, a group of Jones Chapel members gathered at the church for a pork BBQ fundraiser. Orders had been taken earlier, so on Saturday they had to cook, package, and deliver (or wait for pick up). While waiting for the pork to cook, some cleaning out of flower beds was done and new flags (US and Christian) were raised – the storm that blew through with lots of wind and rain only stopped progress for 15 or 20 minutes – then, back to work. The proceeds from the BBQ will go toward the July mission trip to WV, July 8 – 15. Please continue to pray for the group as they prepare to teach and minister in WV.

Mulberry Grove made a church-wide trip to Amazement Square in Lynchburg, after the worship service on May 22. It was a wonderful time of fun and fellowship for the young and young-at-heart. It was a fun activity that promoted getting together for a good time.

JRBA Celebrates>>>

Antioch (Scottsville) celebrates the election of Mrs. Sherron Pace as a Church Trustee. They also celebrate additions to their church family – David and Melissa McLain had twins born on May 6, a boy and a girl.

On May 15, Buckingham held a Baptismal Service and welcomed new members, Angela Wood, Juanita Wilkerson, and Randy Wilkerson.

All the mothers at Cedar were recognized with gifts on Mother’s Day on May 8. Special recognition was given to the following: Youngest Mother – Ashley Davis; Oldest Mother – Evelyn Hardiman; the Mother with the most children present – Evelyn Hardiman, Annette Allen, Sarah Haines, Kathy Midkiff, and Wendy Gormus (all having their 3 children with them). Special thanks to Tina Banton for a fantastic job of compiling a Mother’s Day slide presentation. Everyone enjoyed the photos and they really brought back a lot of special memories.

Chestnut Grove welcomes Melinda Price, wife of David Price, into their membership by transfer of letter.

Jones Chapel’s Mother’s Day service included the presentation of three hanging baskets to: Oldest Mother – Mrs. Irene Wyatt; Youngest Mother – Angelina Chambliss; and Mother with the most children (five) – Angela Whaley. Pastor Tuttle and Grace Martin made the presentations.

Mt. Zion held a Commissioning Service on Sunday, May 15, for Dorothy Davis and Brenda McAllister, as they prepared to participate with the JRBA Mission Team to Bland. The service was led by Pastor Don Campbell and everyone gave words of encouragement to them. A tasty meal followed the service before they left. Pastor Don gave everyone a prayer card for the Week of Prayer for Associational Missions: Pray for Associational Leaders, Pastors, the 18 JRBA Churches, Local families serving with IMB, WMU Project Ruth (and adopted child), and individuals who are lost and in need of a Savior.

Tar Wallet held a Baptismal Service and luncheon on May 29 for Michael Chapman and Danielle Dowdy. They welcome them into their membership.

Antioch (Scottsville) lost a beloved member, Mr. James Thompson. He was 90 years old. Please remember his wife, Ruby, and his daughters, Sandra, June, and Judy, in your prayers. Grandson, Anthony Clore, sang at his memorial service on May 22.

Jones Chapel is saddened to have lost a faithful and beloved, long-time member, David Speas. Their love and prayers are with his family and friends. They also extend their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Mrs. Mattie Clements, a member of Jones Chapel who was unable to attend service for an extended period of time due to her declining health.

IN APPRECIATION>>>

Cedar extends its appreciation to Kathy Midkiff as the sponsor of their Relay for Life Team on May 6th, helping to make that special day a big success!

JRBA sends out a big THANK YOU to Mike Fraticelli and his boys for their help in picking up and delivering file cabinets to the associational office. We also want to thank Debbie White of the Darden School of Business, UVA, for seeing that the cabinets were donated to JRBA. (And, thank you, to Gayle Noble, for telling Debbie about our need for cabinets!) If you have a chance, come by the office to see our “like new” cabinets, and express your thanks to these fine folks when you run into them!

JRBA also extends our appreciation to Dr. Wes Saxon and Buckingham Family Dentistry (Dr. Bryant and Drs. Seiler) for their donations of dental floss for the Bland Dental Ministry. Great strides are being made in dental care and education through that ministry.

For Your Information>>>>

Dr. John Upton and Dr. Valeria Carter shared an interview spot on Channel 6’s (WTVR) Virginia This Morning, on Friday, May 13. They talked about the missions and ministries throughout Virginia of the BGAV and WMUV. They touched on BGAV’s recent Disaster Relief responses in Appomattox and other areas after the tornado and on WMUV’s projects aimed at human trafficking and mental illness, feeding the hungry and clothing the naked. Hopefully, some of you saw the telecast – it was very informative about the missional work being done across our state.

Staff Changes>>>

Rev. Doug Adams, Buckingham, will end his pastorate there on June 12. He and his family will be relocating to a church in North Carolina.

We wish Doug and Susan well as they embark on this next season of their ministry journey.

From Our Moderator>>>

And how can anyone preach unless they be sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.”

Romans 10:15

I want to thank everyone that went on the Bland Mission trip and the trip to Honduras. Also those who sent them by donating and praying. The WMUV Standing Rock Indian Reservation Mission trip is coming up in July. They are asking for pillows and pillowcases, along with children’s undies. I haven’t heard of anyone from JRBA planning to go, but if you are, God Bless You.

School is out for the summer. If you helped with the Baccalaureate Services, thank you. It’s all about bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ! VBS is being planned at our churches, family vacations are being planned, cookouts, swimming and camps – let us always remember we are representatives of Jesus Christ and should always show love and consideration to everyone we meet. Sometimes that’s easier said than done. Just remember Jesus said to do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

In His Service,

Marilyn
