Transcript Analysis Project 2

This class is reading an article, “You Must Leave Now!” out of the magazine, Storyworks. The discussion takes place as the article is being read by the teacher, Mrs. Crouse.

This is a fourth grade class of 22 students. Most of the students are from lower to middle class families. Of the 22 students, 21 are white, and 1 is African-American. Seven students are above average academically, ten are average academically, and five are below average academically. Out of these five, one goes to a resource room for reading.

Mrs. Crouse: You Must Leave Now Wow, what an interesting title. Let’s read this article and find out who must leave and why. Turn to page 17 and look at the top. Follow along as I read.

So, this sounds like it will be what kind of story, Allen?

Allen: An autobiography.

Mrs. Crouse: Good, this is a story about Dorothy Patent written by her.

Mrs. Crouse: Why is the house in danger, Tabby?

Tabby: The fire is so close it might set the house on fire.

Mrs. Crouse: Good, Dylan?

Dylan: There are lots of trees and woods around her home and if the fire burns the trees it will spread to her house and burn it.

Mrs. Crouse: Wonderful, and where did the fire come from, what fire are they talking about Beth?

Beth: There was a wildfire in the mountain but we are not told how the fire started.

Mrs. Crouse: Great, let’s continue reading to find out more.

Mrs. Crouse: In this section we have learned something totally new about wildfires. What is the big idea in this section, Dustin?

Dustin: The fire causes dead trees and beetles eat the dead trees.

Mrs. Crouse: Ok, what else, Cody?

Cody: Ash fertilizers the ground and makes plants grow.

Mrs. Crouse: Good, all of these are told in this section and if we put them all together what would the main idea be, Shareen?

Shareen: Fires can also be useful to people, animals and the plants.

Mrs. Crouse: Well put. Let’s keep reading.

Mrs. Crouse: What does the author mean by the sentence: For them it’s entertainment. For us, it’s anguish. Myra?

Myra: For them it’s like cool, or it is interesting and fun to watch the fire, but for the people who live there it is awful because they are losing their stuff.

Mrs. Crouse: Wonderful, I think you are right. Now, Batteling the Blaze.

Mrs. Crouse: What has this section told us about the fire, Allen?

Allen: That fire, uh, the fire can be stopped by the foam that the firefighters spray.

Mrs. Crouse: Good, Ansley?

Ansley: The firefighters spray foam in the houses and those houses usually survive.

Mrs. Crouse: Very good, I think you two summed it up pretty well.

Mrs. Crouse: How are the firefighters protected, Evan?

Evan: They are protected by Nomex.

Mrs. Crouse: Good, and what is Nomex?

Evan: It is a material that will not burn and their clothes are made from it.

Mrs. Crouse: Look at the last paragraph I read. Why do you think the author gave us that information, Matt?

Matt: She is telling us how the firefighters spend the day and how hard they work. Their jobs are hard.

Mrs. Crouse: Great, I think you are right.

Mrs. Crouse: Why do you think the author throws this question in here, Darson?

Darson: When people live near the forest their houses might catch fire.

Mrs. Crouse: Ok, what do you think, Dylan?

Dylan: It is because firefighters protect other people’s stuff, and it is not their property but they might die protecting someone else’s house.

Mrs. Crouse: Interesting.

Mrs. Crouse: So, how does that happen? How does fire cross the water, Cody?

Cody: I think fuel goes through the air like pollution and burns on the other side of the creek.

Mrs. Crouse: Ok, Matt?

Matt: Fire burns the trees and at times the flames throws burning chunks of the trees and some land on the other side of the creek and then the fire has crossed the water but it didn’t really touch the water.

Mrs. Crouse: Wow, I think you’ve got it.

Mrs. Crouse: How does the author view this place where she lives, Beth?

Beth: She likes living in this place on the mountain, but worries in the summer.

Mrs. Crouse: Good, why does she worry in the summer, Matt?

Matt: She is worried in the summer because wildfires are started then by the dry land but she thinks the risk of the fire is worth it because she loves living there.

Mrs. Crouse: Ansley?

Ansley: She says that the place is so beautiful and she loves living there with all the animals even though the fires scare them sometimes.

Mrs. Crouse: Wonderful. I think you guys have it!
