Julian of Norwich’s storyJulian of Norwich was born in 1342. When she was 30 and living at home, Julian suffered from a serious illness. Since people presumed she was about to die, a priest visited her in order to pray for her. As the priest prayed for her, he held a crucifix (a cross with Jesus on) over her head. As she gazed on the crucifix, Julian saw Jesus bleeding on the cross. She had 16 visions of Jesus in total and she believed they showed how Jesus loved us as he was willing to die for everyone on the cross. Julian survived the illness and wrote about her experience in her book, Revelations of Divine Love –the first book in English known to have been written by a woman. In her book, Julian wrote all about the problem of sin about how awful sin was. She even said that sin was a kind of hell. She wrote that people had to be sorry for their sins and ask God to forgive them so that God could then help people lead a less sinful life. Julian decided to become an anchoress so she could focus on God. An anchoress was a woman who chose to live a solitary life of prayer. These women lived in a cell (a very small room) attached to a church in order to remove themselves from all the temptations of the world.Julian lived in a cell attached to the church in the City of Norwich. She lived in this cell for the rest of her life and even had food and drink brought to her there. Julian wanted to stay in this cell so she was separate from the sinful world around her. She wanted to live a simple life, focused on God and away from all the temptations of the world. The cell Julian lived in on the side of the church in Norwich had a window that opened outwards into the world. This allowed people to visit her for advice. Men and women of every age went to Julian for advice and also to ask her to forgive their sins to make sure their souls could go to heaven. At the time there was lot of problems in Norwich, like disease and poverty, and so Julian became an important figure within her community. She was even visited by another extremely religious woman Margery Kempe, who went to Norwich in 1413 to receive advice on her spiritual life. Julian died in 1416. Today Julian’s cell in Norwich is visited by pilgrims from all over the world. Since 2013, there have been week-long celebrations every year in Norwich which feature concerts, lectures, workshops and tours to teach people about Julian of Norwich.Julian of Norwich’s storyJulian of Norwich was born in 1342.
