2016-2017Lake Asbury Junior High Band HandbookTigersMrs. Amanda Jones, Director of Bands2851 Sandridge RoadGreen Cove Springs, FL 32043(904) 291-5582 ext. 224Band CoursesThe band program at Lake Asbury Junior High offers progressive levels of instruction. The following is a description of the courses offered in the music department.Beginning Band: Beginning band is a basic course in instrumental music and music theory for first year brass, woodwind, and percussion players. No previous experience on any instrument or with music reading is necessary. Students in this class will learn everything from the beginning—music reading, music writing, music history, playing an instrument, care of instruments, and making music together! Students will be guided through the process of selecting an instrument to play for the rest of their time at Lake Asbury Junior High during their first few weeks of classes. This band meets during the regular school day. Students will have approximately three performances during the school year in the form of public concerts. Attendance at each is mandatory. In preparation for these performances, there will be a few after-school rehearsals on specified dates. Attendance for these will also be required.Intermediate Band- Intermediate Band is made of students who have played before the start of the school year. These students have previous band experience whether they began learning their instruments in summer band camp or were in band during the last school year. Intermediate Band students will perform at least two concerts throughout the year. Placement in Intermediate Band and chair placements are made at the Director’s discretion.Concert Band: Students are placed in this band based on an audition. The majority of students in this band will be in 8th grade, but incoming 7th graders can be placed in Symphonic Band based on the director's discretion. Symphonic Band students play at a variety of events throughout the year including but not limited to the Winter and Spring Concerts, Two High School Football Games, and optionally, Solo and Ensemble. Additional rehearsals are not generally called, but would be done so with plenty of notice. Placement in Concert Band and chair placements are made at the Director’s discretion.Symphonic Band: Students are placed in this band based on an audition. The majority of students in this band will be in 8th grade, but incoming 7th graders can be placed in Symphonic Band based on the director's discretion. Symphonic Band students play at a variety of events throughout the year including but not limited to the Winter and Spring Concerts, Two High School Football Games, a joint concert with the Chorus, Music Performance Assessment, Solo and Ensemble, 6th Grade Orientation Night, Recruitment Concerts and audition for All-State or Clay County Honor Band. To perform for these events, students will be required to attend before or after school rehearsals as a part of their grade. Failure to attend before and afterschool rehearsals will impact a student’s grade and may result in being moved different band class. Placement in Symphonic Band and chair placements are made at the Director’s discretion.EXPECTATIONS? During the school day, each student should keep his or her instrument in the band room in an assigned locker. Please, DO NOT store band instruments in hall lockers or in other classrooms. This is a security risk. There is plenty of time to get to the band room in the morning and in the afternoon, as long as you “walk with a sense of purpose.”? Instruments will be labeled with the student’s first and last name. This willhelp prevent others from accidentally grabbing the wrong instrument. Mrs. Jones will also have each school instrument’s serial number on file, if anything does occur.? To help maintain security, students must bring or retrieve their own instrument from the band room. Additionally, only band members may enter the band room.? Students are held accountable for any school-owned item(s) assigned to them. Lost or damaged items are their responsibility to replace or repair in a timely manner.? Each band student is expected to practice their instrument and will be given assignments. Playing an instrument is physical; therefore, you need to build muscles and endurance. I suggest setting aside a regular time of approximately 15-20 minutes in a well-lit area with a music stand. (Wire music stands can be purchased from any music store.) Students will be given the opportunity to practice in the mornings before school on specific days.? If a student is sick and cannot play their instrument, they are to participate by fingering along on their instrument. Students who have an excused absence from school will not lose their participation points for the day.? Lost Music: If you lost a piece of sheet music, there will be a 10 cent replacement fee. The lost copy of music will be made at Mrs. Jones’ convenience.? Rehearsals: Students may be expected to attend rehearsals as part of their grade. Students in Symphonic Band who do not attend their rehearsals may be moved to a different band. CLASS/REHEARSAL RULES AND GUIDELINESWhen students enter the band room for class, they will have three minutes to take out their instruments and have a seat. Three minutes after the bell rings, class will start. Any student not prepared to play at this point will be marked tardy. Beginning band students will receive extra time during the first half of the year. In order to accomplish as much as possible each day, class time will be very structured. To keep it this way, students must follow a simple, but strict discipline policy. In addition to all school rules, there are guidelines to behavior in band class:1. If you would like to talk, raise your hand and get permission first.2. Stay in your seat, unless you have permission to get up.3. Only play your instrument when directed.4. Gum, food and drinks are not allowed in the band room. Any items left over from lunch or brought from another class can be left at the bookshelf by the door with permission from the band director.5. Touch only your assigned instrument. Don’t play somebody else’s even if they let you.6. Follow the teacher’s directions on the first time7. Students who do not have their instrument by that day will have their class changed.)- Accent on Achievement - Book 1, for beginning band students- Alfred’s Drum Method- Book 1, all percussion students (percussion students are required to have both the Drum Method and Accent on Achievement books).- All music and handouts used in class- 1” Three Ring Binder- Page Protectors- Notebook PaperOptional Items- Wire music stand for at home practice - Metronome- TunerWoodwind StudentsAll clarinet and saxophone players should have at least three or four extra reeds in their cases at all times. This will prevent a student from running out of reeds during class. A student without working reeds cannot play their instrument, and will not be able to fully participate in class. The best brand to get is Vandoren. Cheaper brands do not produce the quality of sound that students will be expected to make. Never leave your reed on your mouthpiece for storage. Bassoon and Oboe players should have at least two working reeds at all times. They should also own a swab to clean out their instrument.Brass StudentsAll brass players should have valve oil in their cases at all times (rotor oil for French horns). Keeping valves oiled and clean will prevent many common problems. This will also save money on repairs and maintenance. Trombones should have slide oil to keep their slides in working order. Each student needs to purchase their own mouthpiece.Percussion StudentsAll beginning band percussionists need to rent a bell kit from a local music store – this is the instrument used to start students on the percussion instruments. All percussion students should have a stick bag with sticks, bells mallets, and medium-hard yarn mallets with a stick bag. The stick bag should be labeled with the student’s name. Costello’s Music and Music and Arts should have this information on hand for our school. Wish List for Band ClassKleenex, Paper Towels, Hand Sanitizer, Paper Plates, Wet Wipes, Valve Oil, Black Socks, Black BeltsLockersThere are a limited number of individual instrument lockers available for students. Locks can be rented for $5.00 for the school year. Priority will be given to students who own their own instrument and then 8th grade students. All students will have a designated place to keep their instrument in the band room. Only band-related items are to be kept in the band lockers.Instrument RentalsSome students will rent school-owned instruments for the year (oboe, bassoon, tuba, euphonium, French horn). A contract will be signed and a fee of $50 will be assessed. All other instruments will be rented through a local music store. Specific information will be provided after instruments have been assigned. Please do not rent your child an instrument without speaking to Mrs. Jones first!UNIFORMS, FUNDRAISING, BAND FEEBand is a nonprofit organization. We have a lot of expenses that we need to cover, and fundraising is the only way we can meet our needs. All students will be assessed a $60.00 fee to help us pay for these items. This is separate from the cost of renting your instrument—that has nothing to do with the school and is through an outside company.Band Fees help to cover a variety of expenses that the program incurs over the course of the year. Items that are purchased include band polos and tuxedo shirts for new students, bus transportation, instrument purchase and repair, music purchase and music assessment fees etc.For performances, students will need to purchase black dress pants and nice, closed toe black shoes (with black socks!). These will NOT be provided for you. First year students are provided with band polos and tuxedo shirts. Students in Symphonic and Concert Band will use the same shirts from the previous year. If the student has outgrown or lost the shirts, they can be purchased during the first month of school. The band will provide students will a cummerbund and bow tie for the performance, which will be turned in immediately following. If there is an issue with cost, please contact the director. Appropriate band attire will be a part of each child’s concert grade. There will also be two fundraisers throughout the year. Profits from these fundraisers will help to cover the costs of new instruments, chairs, stands and other incidentals.PRIVATE LESSONSPrivate music lessons are highly encouraged, but NOT required as membership in any ensemble. Lessons give the student more self-confidence and personal attention to specific musical skills than band rehearsal alone. It will also help with future musical endeavors if the student has been taking private lessons for a period of time. Private lessons are VERY HIGHLY suggested if you plan on trying out for any Honors Ensembles. Speak with Mrs. Jones if you need information on Private Music Instructors.LAKE ASBURY JUNIOR HIGH TIGER BAND2016-2017Amanda Jones, DIRECTORThis handbook states the rules and regulations of this Band organization.
