ANIMAL INDUSTRY ADVISORY
Invasive Asian Longhorned tick identified in Pickens County
The Georgia Department of Agriculture Animal Health Division has confirmed the presence of the Haemaphysalis longicornis tick (otherwise known as the Asian Longhorned tick) on a cow in Pickens County.
10 0 t1h9A17nn?iv2e0r1s7ary identified in Georgia and the investigation is
ongoing to determine the extent of the tick's presence in the area.
The Asian Longhorned tick is native to eastern Asia. In 2017, the USDA confirmed
Subsequently, it's been identified in several eastern states.
According to the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the Asian Longhorned tick can be found anywhere in
domestic animals and wildlife hosts. The GDA recommends the following ad-
vice to farmers, foresters, and those who frequent areas where ticks are abundant: ? Wear long pants, with shoes and socks ?
This is the first case of the invasive tick the presence of the tick in the United States. the environment but may prefer tall grasses no flip-flops or sandals in these areas.
and wooded areas. They like to hitch rides ? Check yourself carefully after strolling

They attach to and feed on a great variety of
any ticks immediately. If possible, have someone else check the back of your neck
and other hard-to-see places. ? Work with your veterinarian and exten-
sion agent to discuss an appropriate tick
strategy for your flock or herd.
? Check cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and
other free-ranging animals routinely for
any kind of ticks and remove immediately.
While there are no approved insecticides for the Asian Longhorned tick in the U.S.,
many of the commonly used permethrin preparations used in the country today are
effective. Livestock producers must observe
tissue withdrawal times for all insect preven-
tion or treatment preparations used in or on
food animals.
If you find a large number of ticks on an
individual animal in your herd, call your veterinarian and report it to GDA Animal
To remove a tick:
1.Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as you can.
2.Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don't twist or jerk the tick.
3.After removing the tick, clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.

GDA teams up with State Rep. Wayne Howard to make trips to the gas pump easier for disabled Georgians

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and State Rep. Henry "Wayne" How-
ard, D-Augusta, are traveling the state together to unveil a bipartisan collaboration, Assistance at the Pump, for the benefit of disabled drivers who may face hurdles at the gas pump.
Over the next 18 months, all gasoline pumps in Georgia will get new Georgia Department of Agriculture inspection stickers directing those who need assistance pumping gas to call the store for help. Howard proposed the idea with the introduction of HB
Inspection stickers affixed to every gas pump in the state by Georgia Department of Agriculture Fuel Inspectors will now include phone numbers that disabled Georgians may use to call the station attendant and request assistance pumping gas.
437 during the regular General Assembly session in February. The bill would require attendants at self-service gas stations to assist disabled drivers with pumping gas, and to advertise that service with decals affixed to the pumps that prominently display the store's phone number.
The bill was passed by the House but referred to a Senate study committee, so Black proposed accomplishing the same result by updating inspection stickers currently used by GDA fuel inspectors ? who routinely inspect every gas pump in the state every 18 months ? to include the phone number of the store and instructions to physically challenged drivers for contacting the clerk inside for assistance.
"This is not only a victory for our disabled community, but also proof that bipartisan collaboration is always a viable option when attempting to solve an issue," Black said. "We would like to thank Representative Wayne Howard for his leadership in bringing this concern to our attention and working with us to find a workable solution for all involved."
-GDA Communications Office
Commissioner Gary Black joined State Rep. Henry "Wayne" Howard, D-Augusta, and Matthew Wilson, D-Brookhaven, at the Brookhaven RaceTrac to demonstrate how to use the new pump stickers that help physically challenged drivers in need of assistance at gas stations. (GDA Photo)

Good To Grow: Initiative looks to connect gardeners with local food pantries
By Jay Jones
jay.jones@agr.
Gardeners looking to share their backyard harvest have a new way to connect to food pantries through an initiative by Bonnie Plants and the non-profit organization Ample Harvest.
Grow More. Feed More. was launched last year to encourage home gardeners to donate 10 million pounds of fresh, home-grown vegetables to local food pantries. The idea then was to make it easier for gardeners to give back to their communities as the COVID-19 pandemic increased need across the United States.
Mike Sutterer, president and CEO of Bonnie Plants, said the effort in 2020 had 21 million people making a fresh produce donation to a food pantry for the first time and that many returned this year to continue donating extra vegetables from their gardens.
"One of the things we really want to do, and our partners at Ample Harvest want to do, is to make donating part of your vegetable harvest to your local food pantry," Sutterer said. "We want to make giving just a part of what it means to garden."
Ample Harvest created an online database to take the frustration out of finding a food pantry. Food pantries looking for fresh produce can register online at . Gardeners can go to the website and type in their zip code to generate a list of food pantries near them. The gardener can then call to determine what is needed and when to drop off a donation.
Ample Harvest was started in New Jersey in 2009 by Gary Oppenheimer. While serving as director of a community garden, he noticed that many gardeners left large amounts of their produce unharvested. The gardeners planned to collect the extra produce to donate but found it difficult to find a food pantry nearby.
Today, Ample Harvest has 8,000 food pantries registered in all 50 states and has enabled 42 million gardeners to donate garden surplus.
Sutterer said Bonnie Plants pitched in last year by converting their test gardens in Alabama and Ohio into production

gardens to donate as part of its Grow More. Feed More. initiative. That effort generated 10,000 pounds of harvest in the last two years.
The company has also committed to providing five percent of all its online plant sales during the spring planting season to Ample Harvest, which is estimated to result in more
than four million servings of fresh produce donated over five years, according to Ample Harvest.
Sutterer said that working with the South Alabama Food Bank ? which supplies food pantries in communities near the headquarters of Bonnie Plants in Union Springs, Ala. ? allows the company to coordinate donations to ensure the produce ends up on someone's table within 24 hours.
"It is an extremely efficient way to get food from gardeners to the people who need it the most. You really don't lose anything," Sutterer said. "You've got all of that freshness that is essentially taken directly from a garden to a food pantry and ultimately to someone's home."
Annette and Jared Thurmon in Adairsville used Ample Harvest to connect with a food pantry in Rome to make donations. They operate Azure Farm, a small hobby farm where they grow vegetables, apples and blueberries and raise small livestock.
They connected with the food pantry using Ample Harvest this year and donated extra bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and other produce. Annette Thurmon said she thought food pantries could not accept fresh produce but learned through Ample Harvest that fresh produce was not only needed but sought after for being more nutritious than canned food.
"Families sign up for donations, and the pantry assigns them a certain time of the day to pick up. Some food pantries do it every day, and others do it three times a week," she said. "The food pantry will say you can bring your donations on Mondays and Thursdays because people come to them Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays or something like that."
They donated produce when they had extra, and Annette Thurmon said they hope to donate more as their farm grows. She said they plan to donate part of their fall crop, too. Regardless of the amount or size of the garden, she encouraged everyone to donate. "I tell people that if you are able to do just a grocery bag of something once a season, that is still more than nothing and will certainly help somebody."
