Olson Date: April 2021 JOB SUMMARYThe RN – MSC Infection Prevention & Education is a registered nurse who assumes the overall responsibility of infection prevention within the operating room and the pre/post area. This position is responsible for the development, training, maintenance, surveillance, and prevention of infections at the Madison Surgery Center (MSC) based on ongoing risk analysis. The RN is responsible for instituting and managing appropriate surveillance to ensure compliance with nationally recognized infection control standards. Additionally, the RN will assist with education and development opportunities for the staff of MSC, including onboarding, orientation, and competencies. The RN – MSC Infection Prevention & Education will work closely with Quality and other UW Health Infection Control Practitioners under the supervision of the MSC Director and Nurse Managers. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIESClinical Practice and Quality of CareDevelops, reviews, and revises policies and procedures for ongoing improvement of infection control practice at the Madison Surgery CenterEnsures compliance with infection control policies and procedures. Initiates appropriate corrective action when noncompliance is identified, including further collaboration with additional UW Health Infection Control Practitioners. Completes infection reports, investigations, and assessments. Identifies possible surgical site infections for acquired infections. Actively participates in the evaluation of sterilization techniques utilized at the Madison Surgery Center to ensure compliance with all nationally recognized standards on sterilization (i.e. AAMI).Assists in the management and evaluation of the influenza program and any internal or external outbreaks which may affect operations at the MSC.Maintains relationships with departments of the organization to ensure infection control compliance. EducationDevelops new staff onboarding to ensure adequate orientation for new staff members of MSC. Develops an orientation program to ensure that all learning needs will be met. Reviews goals and objectives with new staff members. Facilitates education to staff and providers regarding the infection prevention plan. Provides updates and education on changes to standards of infection control. Works with nursing staff councils to develop annual competencies. Develops core competencies as well as high risk and low volume procedural competencies. Educates staff and providers on nationally recognized standards used at the Madison Surgery Center (WHO, AORN, AAMI, CDC).Analyzes ongoing educational needs of MSC staff and provides pertinent educational sessions as needed on a range of topics. Other DutiesParticipates in multidisciplinary performance improvement projects and analyzes statistical data for trends. Assists Quality, Infection Control Practitioners, and performance improvement committees to develop corrective plans. Coordinates, manages, and maintains accurate records which include data collection, aggregation, and visual management of information and statistics. Reports appropriate and/or required information to the state Department of Health and Center for Disease Control per state and federal regulations.
