Matter Unit - Griffin Middle School

Unit 3: Food and Cooking

Lesson 1: Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures

Name:____________

Due Date: ________

|Standard - S8P1: Students will examine the scientific view of the nature of matter. |

|Element a.: Distinguish between atoms and molecules |

|Element b.: Describe the difference between pure substances (elements and compounds) and mixtures. |

|Key Vocabulary | |

|atom |element |

|proton |compound |

|neutron |mixture |

|electron |pure substance |

|molecule | |

Knowledge Level I:  Students will know

1. the vocabulary of elements, compounds and mixtures

2. the parts of the atom

3. a group of the same type of atoms is an element

4. atoms bonded together form a molecule

5. a group of the same molecules is a compound

6. a mixture is a group of different elements, compounds or both elements and compounds

** For Knowledge Level I, complete the required items (shown with **) plus 7 additional items. You must show your completed work to Mr. Jansen and be prepared to answer questions or demonstrate your knowledge from the assignment to receive credit.

1. **Create a vocabulary flip book, flash cards or word boxes for the words in this unit.

2. Read the text book chapter 11, sect 1 on Atomic Theory (Pg 312) and answer questions 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10 (page 317)

3. Read the text book chapter 11, sect21 on The Atom Theory (Pg 318) and answer questions 2, 3, 8, 9 (page 325)

4. Listen to the lecture on atoms and molecules. Take notes.

5. Create a flip book showing the structure of 3 different types of atoms. Since this is an art project, it needs to have a lot of artistic detail.

6. Build a model of an atom showing the structure of the atom.

7. Write a poem, song, or rap about the structure of the atom.

8. Build a Mickey Mouse Molecule

9. Complete the Gizmo “Element Builder” lesson “Creating Elements and Understanding Impact of subatomic particles »

10. Read the text book chapter 4, sect 1 on Elements (Pg 90) and answer questions 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 (page 93)

11. Read the text book chapter 4, sect 2 on Compounds (Pg 94) and answer questions 1, 2, 3, 6 (page 97)

12. Read the text book chapter 4, sect 3 on Mixtures (Pg 98) and answer 5,6,8, (page 105)

13. Listen to the lecture on elements, compounds and mixtures.  Take notes.

14. Read the text book chapter 12, sect 1 on Arranging the Elements (Pg 336) and answer 2,3,7, (page 343)

15. Read the text book chapter 12, sect 2 on Grouping the Elements (Pg 344) and answer 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,11,12 (page 351)

16. Listen to the lecture on the periodic table.  Take notes.

17. ** Quizes

1. Vocabulary

2. Atoms vs Molecules

3. Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

4. The Periodic Table

Knowledge Level II:  Students will understand

7. how the periodic table provides information about the structure of the atom for each element

8. the difference between a pure substance and a mixture.

9. how to identify an item as an element, compound or mixture

** For Knowledge Level II, complete the required item (shown with **) plus 2 additional items. You must show your completed work to Mr. Jansen and be prepared to answer questions or demonstrate your knowledge from the assignment to receive credit.

18. Select 3 elements from the periodic table from different families and make a model or poster showing the structure of the atom for the elements. Include the element block from the periodic table for the elements selected. Show the relationship between the element block and the parts of your model or poster. List at least 5 properties for each element.

19. Create a poster showing examples of an element, compound and mixture showing the atoms they are made from.  Since this is an art project, it needs to have a lot of artistic detail.

20. Build a model of an element, compound and mixture showing the atoms they are made from.

21. Write a poem, song, or rap about elements, compounds and mixtures and how they are alike and different in the way the atoms make them.

22. Complete Atoms or Molecules experiment.

23. **Molecular Model Kit Activity

Performance Level I: Students will be able to

10. Distinguish between atoms and molecules.

11. Distinguish between an element, compound and mixture.

12. Describe the difference between pure substances and mixtures.

** For Performance Level I, complete one item plus the unit test. You must show your completed work to Mr. Jansen and be prepared to answer questions or demonstrate your knowledge from the assignment to receive credit.

24. Write a one page story from the point of view of an atom as it combines with another atom or atoms to become a molecule and then with other atoms and or molecules to become a mixture. Be sure to use the language of this unit found in the vocabulary.

25. Create a poster or model of an atom of an element of your choice. Show how this element can be combined with another type of element or elements to create a compound and how this atom can be found in a mixture. Be sure to use the language of this unit found in the vocabulary.

26. matter/index/html.  Read through the sections on Matter, Elements, and Atoms.  Use this information to make a presentation to the class.  Your presentation should demonstrate that you have mastered the “able to” items for this level. The presentation should include a visual and should be at least 3 to 5 minutes.
