Choreography Tools

These tools add variety to movement.

Unison- movement that is performed together (looks the same)

Levels- (low, middle, high)

Facings- dancers having different directions and facings on stage

It gives the audience a different perspective.

Repetition- repeating movement

Improvisation- spontaneous movement (movement that is not planned or choreographed)

*Accumulation- it builds, add on,(1, 1+2, 1+2+3)

Person 1 starts, person 1 starts later (adds on) in unison with person 1…

*Contrast- seeing a difference, seeing a contrast in movement

Examples- seen in levels (low, middle, high), seen in timing (half, regular, and double)

*Echo- Person 1 does a movement or movement phrase and finishes; Person 2 does a movement phrase and finishes, etc

copy cat effect, no overlapping movement, stop and go

*Canon- Person 1 starts a phrase, person 2 starts the same phrase after person 1, and all people finish the phrase at different times.

overlapping movement, ripple effect (everyone will not start together and will not end together) (could be a 2 ct, 4ct, or 8 ct (etc)canon)

Canons can be done in groups or individual people (least amount needed=2)

*Connected- movement that is connected, someone is always physically touching within the group

*Mirroring- having a mirror image

Example-one person may be lifting their right arm while another is lifting their left

Transition- Movement that helps dancers transition from one phrase to another. It helps a dance run smoothly from beginning to middle to the end. May include traveling and PATHWAYS.

*Transpose- mix up the measures (mix up the order of original phrase)(ex-which 1234 to 5678)

*Impose- change the rhythm/ a new rhythm to the same movement phrase

*Flatten- every note/movement is one beat
