Book Report Section 1 – Focus: Literary Elements

Choose one activity for each of the 7 following literary elements: Setting, Theme, Character Development, Conflict, Climax, Plot Development, and Vocabulary. The length of each activity should be approximately 200 words. Your book report should be typed and include a title page (see title page example below).

SETTING

1. Pretend you are the main character in your book. Write a letter to a friend describing the house and district in which you live. Ask your friend to come for a visit and tell him or her, what interesting things there are to do there OR provide reasons why you don’t want to be where you are.

OR

2. Draw or make a collage using magazine pictures to recreate the setting of your novel. Include a written explanation of your representation.

OR

3. Draw a map to represent the various locations where your novel takes place. Include a written explanation of your representation and a legend.

THEME

1. Find a song you feel expresses the main theme of your novel. Include a copy of the lyrics, title, and song writer, of the song and an explanation to support your choice.

OR

2. Write or find a poem you feel expresses the main theme of your novel. Include a copy of the words, title, and author, of the poem and an explanation to support your choice.

OR

3. Compare and contrast the theme of your novel to another book you have read (text to text connection).

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

1. Write a letter to a pen pal introducing yourself as the protagonist or antagonist in the novel. You could mention hobbies you have, or you could retell something of interest that has happened to you.

OR

2. List five minor characters and briefly describe the parts these characters played in the novel.

OR

3. Design a chart that includes the major and minor characters and that shows their relationships to each other. Be sure to include a legend or an explanation of your chart.

CONFLICT

1. Provide examples and explanations for 3 sources of conflict in your novel:

2. Choose one minor conflict in your novel and outline what happened, and who or what was involved.

CLIMAX

1. Describe the climax (highest point of interest) of the novel you read. Write in the voice of a sports broadcaster and give the play by play report to build up to the moment of the highest interest and greatest emotion.

2. While you were reading, at the highest point of interest, explain what you thought would be the outcome. Explain whether you were right or wrong. Would you have made any changes? Explain.

PLOT DEVELOPMENT

1. Pretend you are a newspaper reporter and write an article in proper newspaper style on an event that either happened or could have happened in your novel.

OR

2. Had you been the author of this novel, would you have written any part of it differently? What part would you change? Why? If you liked the novel the way it was and wouldn’t make any changes, explain why.

VOCABULARY

1. Find five words in your novel you would replace with other words. Include the word in its original sentence with a page reference, your new word in the sentence and one sentence to explain why you would make the change.

OR

2. A glossary is useful to a person reading a book because it explains the meanings of unusual words. Find 10 unusual words in your book and make a glossary of them (including a page reference for each word).

[pic] Book Report Section 2 – Focus: Filmstrip Storyboard

Your storyboard will be divided into 12 panels that summarize your novel from beginning to end. The first panel should include the title, author and your name. Please use all 11 remaining panels to summarize your novel using pictures and words.

You will need to complete a rough copy of your storyboard followed by your copy of the filmstrip that is handed in to me. This should be in blue or black ink (preferably typed). You may choose to type and glue sections onto the filmstrip paper that I collect. I will be photocopying these onto a piece of clear plastic. You may use permanent markers to color the plastic and allow it some time to dry. The four sections should be attached with clear tape.

You will present these filmstrips in front of the class on an overhead projector. All panels will be presented except for the last one or two because we wouldn’t want to give away the ending. This will also include the following:

-Provide a rating from the 5 star rating you developed in your genre group and three reasons to justify your rating.

-Who would you recommend this book to? Justify your point of view with three supporting details.

You will be able to use a recipe card during your presentation to highlight the main ideas of your presentation to keep you on track. Please check the rubric to make sure you cover all of the requirements.
