Literary Element Notes for Short Story:

As we go over in class what the basic elements of all stories are, follow along and take notes inside of the outline. Answer all questions that are embedded in the notes. Answer all questions in complete sentences. This will be collected and graded.

I. Setting:

a. Definition

Setting: Look at the image and describe the setting in as much detail as possible. What can you infer, or figure out, about the story from the setting in the pictures? Take about 5 minutes for each and then be ready to share your ideas with the rest of the class.

II. Point of view

Now watch the webcast on POV and add any pertinent information that you will need to understand point of view.

Now take about 30 minutes (ten minutes per paragraph) and write three versions of the same event, one in first person, one in third limited, one in third omniscient. It can be any even you want; a shark attack, a killer invasion of ants, or the meeting of two young people.

Take about 5 minutes right now and come up with an example from a book you have read or a movie you have seen from each of the four types of conflict. Be ready to discuss them with the class and to be able to defend your choices.

Now we will look at the four images. Consider each one and figure out which type of conflict is being represented in each and how you know. Be ready to defend your position in the following discussion.

Now watch the video. While you watch, I want you to take note of a few things. Watch for the protagonist (how do you know who is the protagonist), the antagonist (again, how do you know), and look for both direct and indirect characterization of the different characters on the screen. We will watch the video clip a few times so that you can get as much out of it as you can.

Antagonist (notice how she looks, what she is wearing, what we learn about her from the others. How is she the antagonist and how is that revealed?)
