TASK – Character

CHARACTERS - Write about a character in a novel that impresses you because they have character traits that you admire. Explain why you admire this character and give evidence and examples of when they behave in an impressive way.

1. Introduction

You need to relate your introduction directly to the TASK. It needs to be clear from the start of your writing what you are writing about.

A. State the title of the novel you are going to be writing about, the author’s name and why it is suitable for the task.

B. Briefly explain what the novel is about.

C. Explain that the author has helped you to understand and admire the character by successfully using literary techniques / key events – name examples that are relevant – e.g. what the character does / says description of key scenes and any successful writing techniques..

2. Summary – Relate to the task

Summarise the main events of the story that are relevant to the task

• Focus on key events that highlight how the character behaves and what it tells you about them.

• Try to clearly write about what they do and how they progress from the beginning of the novel to the final outcome.

• You DO NOT need to comment on writing techniques used by the author at this stage.

3. Main Body – Evaluation (4 or 5 paragraphs)

You now need to go on to discuss the novel in more detail, identifying the techniques and key scenes included by the author and explaining how they help you to understand what the character is like and why you admire them.

In each paragraph you need to:

1. Point – Topic Sentence - Make a clear point related to the CHARACTER.

2. Example – Identify the example (& technique) and support with evidence from text - QUOTE

3. Explain - What effect does this have – what does it tell us about the character’s personality?

4. Link – How well does the example help you to understand the character and how does it make you admire them?

CONCLUSION

▪ Summarise your overall impression of your chosen character in your novel.

▪ Comment on the techniques/events which you found most successful.

▪ What are you reactions to the theme of the story?

▪ Can you relate your life to the character or the message that the author is trying to convey?
