Course Description:

This course teaches the fundamentals of personal finance through the creation of a financial plan, management of personal finances, and reaching personal financial goals. Topics include the establishment of financial objectives (home ownership, education, and retirement), budgeting and savings, personal income tax, investments (stocks, bonds, and mutual funds), retirement, and estate planning. The effective use of and management of credit is covered. Experience is provided with a variety of microcomputer software applications, including word processing, electronic spreadsheets, graphics, file management, and integrated software. Concepts and terms focus on preparing for a technologically oriented society and using the computer as a tool for productivity, research, and communication.

Requirements:

← Read each chapter; take notes from book and power point lecture.

← Define Vocabulary words in your notebook.

← Complete all worksheets provided and workbook exercises to prepare for test.

← Complete any reinforcement activity needed to excel on tests.

← Complete all workbook simulations using computer programs on time or 10 points will be deducted from that assignment.

← Complete individual as well as group projects using computer programs and textbook.

← Be sure to proofread, spell check, and read all directions!! Quality of your work is very important. A 10 point deduction for any errors.

***STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE HIGHSCHOOL CREDIT AS WELL AS 3 COLLEGE CREDITS FROM MOHAWK VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE PROGRAM ONLY IF THEY SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE COURSE.

Student Outcomes:

➢ Identify important financial statements and describe how and why they are created and used in the development and management of a realistic budget.

➢ Explain the importance of financial planning, identify the socioeconomic and financial influences that impact personal finances, and create a personal financial plan to achieve a set of goals.

➢ Explain consumer credit, analyze the advantages and disadvantages of using different types of credit, and describe the importance of protecting one’s consumer credit score.

➢ Describe strategies to use when considering major purchases, such as motor vehicles and real estate. Define risk, explain how it is mitigated via insurance, and describe coverage and cost options of common insurance policies, such as auto, homeowners, renters, health, and life.

➢ Describe and create a realistic budget plan to meet your future needs.

➢ All students are expected to attend class regularly, participate fully and complete all assignments on or before the due date. Assignments not handed in or exams not taken will be given a grade of ‘zero’ unless there is a valid written excuse.

➢ The use of cell phones is not permitted in class. Please ensure that cell phones are securely stored in your bag/purse/pocket and not placed on the desk during class time.
