ENG3U: The Picture of Dorian Gray

Double Entry Journal Template

For the novel study unit, you will create a double-entry journal (DEJ). These will help you participate in class discussions and find ideas with which you can engage in the literary essays.

The left side must contain twelve quotations from the reading with page numbers noted. Should you wish to refer to a particularly large selection, you may paraphrase it.

The right side must comment on four of these eight points. Your right side can respond to questions such as:

• What strikes you about this?

• What was your first thought when you read this? And then? And then?

• What does this passage/idea make you think of or remember?

• Do you want to challenge or qualify this author’s claim? In what ways do you agree with it? Disagree?

• What else have you read/heard/experienced that connects with this author’s ideas?

• Does something confuse you or lead to further questions?

• How do you feel about this?

Use the template below for your double-entry journal. You may hand write them as you go, but they must be typed and submitted for evaluation at the end of the unit. Be prepared to discuss your novel passages and entries in class.

When I evaluate these, I will be looking for detail and explanation. The best way to guarantee earning a level 4 is to comment on your personal response; why did you pick that quote, why is it significant to your understanding of the novel, how does it connect to real life, etc. When the entries are typed they should be approximately ½ page each. USE PLENTY OF DETAIL!

I have included an exemplar on the first page.

|7 |“When I like people immensely I never tell |I agree. This passage reveals a lot about Basil. He is acting almost |

| |their names to anyone. It is like surrendering|childish, keeping secrets and not telling any details about his new muse,|

| |a part of them. I have grown to love |Dorian Gray. I think his comment on secrecy is foreshadowing; perhaps |

| |secrecy….The commonest thing is delightful if |later he will keep a secret that will change events? I have felt this way|

| |one only hides it.” (Basil Hallward) |– not telling anyone about a person I like – its almost as if you don’t |

| | |want to share them. This happens now with social media; once something is|

| | |“out there” you can’t take it back. A person’s name or how you feel about|

| | |them can be misconstrued so easily. By keeping ones feelings private it |

| | |cannot be misconstrued. I don’t think Basil trusts Henry; it seems |

| | |obvious that he will put a wedge between Dorian and the painter. Hmm…a |

| | |love triangle or obsession perhaps? Secrets and hiding things will cause |

| | |much confusion I’m sure. |
