Mission statements - Yola

LESSON 3

Mission statements

A well-designed and well-written mission statement, whether a single sentence or

multiple pages of information, reflects the essence of a business—what the business

is about, why it exists and what goals it aims to achieve. This statement provides

inspiration as well as a clear, strategic direction for all of those associated with the

organisation, from shareholders, directors and employees to suppliers, lenders and

clients.

Some Examples:

T h i n k a n d e x p l o r e

• ‘To be the global leader in rentable home entertainment.’

• ‘To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.’

• ‘To be the world’s premier consumer products company focused on convenient foods and beverages.

Work environments

Rapid changes in business, as well as changing attitudes in employees have brought

about new, freer work environments. Organisations are striving for increased

productivity and employees are demanding greater job satisfaction and personal

achievement

The desire of modern workforces to achieve greater work/life balance has

also driven workers to seek alternatives to the desk-bound, nine-to-five routines

of the past. Traditional workplaces are making way for more creative and fun

environments that many claim can result in higher productivity with less stress and

emotional illness suffered by workers.

Traditional work environments

Traditional work environments involve employees working in separate cubicles at

their own workstations—usually a desk, chair, phone and computer—with a printer

centrally located for sharing among several employees. People who enjoy this type of environment appreciate their personal space and find it easier to concentrate, as there are few distractions and lower noise levels. However, others believe traditional environments stifle interaction, communication and creativity.

Open work environments

Open work environments are the opposite of traditional environments. Although

managers and supervisors may have individual offices (with walls and doors), the

remainder of staff are co-located in large, open areas with clusters of workstations

arranged together and low partitions offering minimum privacy. Work stations are

not fixed and can be moved to configure the work areas to suit changing needs.

Virtual work environments o r e

Virtual work environments are becoming commonplace with ‘the office’ likely to be

anything from a motel room, car or home to remote locations such as an outback

farm, forest or oil rig in the middle of Bass Strait. Co-workers are connected

wirelessly rather than physically and may never even get to meet one another.

Some of the benefits of virtual working include:

• the convenience of working from any location and often at a time that suits the

individual

• recruiting preferred employees for their skills and abilities, no matter where

they are located and, where applicable, removing the barrier of many physical

handicaps

A major disadvantage for organisations with a dispersed workforce is the challenge of creating the spirit and teamwork that is often necessary for organisations to continue to generate new ideas and thrive.

Working from home n

Working from home is similar in many ways to working virtually. Modern flexible

work arrangements allow some workers to complete tasks at home where it is

quieter with fewer disruptions to distract them. Besides the travel time and costs

saved, individuals can also work hours that best suit their lifestyle demands.

Some organisations will insist that their staff attend the office for part of

the working week, perhaps for meetings or other events, and to maintain good

communication among staff.k a n
