PERSONAL STATEMENT
PERSONAL STATEMENT
The personal statement tells about you as an individual - your talents, experiences, achievements and points of view. Your personal statement should reflect your own ideas and be written by you alone. Write your essay in a natural style, so that it conveys who you are. Present your information and ideas in a focused, thoughtful and meaningful manner. Support your ideas with specific examples. A personal statement that is simply a list of qualities or accomplishments is not usually persuasive. The personal statement is required of all seniors.
You should respond to all three questions using a total of 1,000 words. Two answers must be limited to 200 words. A third should be given an extended answer of at least 600 words. You may choose which question to answer at more length.
Topics:
• How have you taken advantage of the educational opportunities you have had to prepare for college?
Rationale: If you have participated in a special program such as EAOP, MESA, Puente, COSMOS or other similar programs, describe your involvement in the program and discuss how you have benefited from the experience.
• Tell about a talent, experience, contribution or personal quality you have that has impacted your life.
Rationale: This question seeks to determine you academic or creative interest and potential.
• Is there anything additional you would like to express about yourself or your academic record that has not been reflected in the previous topics.
Rationale: This question give you the opportunity to share important aspects of your schooling or your life – such as your personal circumstances, family experiences and opportunities that were or were not available at your school that may not have been sufficiently addressed elsewhere in the personal statement.
