Characterization Creative Mystery Piece

CHARACTERIZATION: The creation of imaginary persons so that they seem lifelike. An author brings a character to life through Speech, Thoughts, Effect on others, Actions, and Looks.

Assignment Overview:

In your second mystery creative writing piece, your task is to create the opening for a potential mystery story in which you focus on introducing the detective. You must bring the character to life using all the elements of S.T.E.A.L. while demonstrating proficiency in formatting and punctuating dialogue.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

• Your character must be either a private detective who helps the police (like Sherlock Holmes) or an actual police detective .

• You will need to hint at the mystery the detective will solve, but do not focus on details of the plot.

• In order to include dialogue, your detective must have a conversation with another person. That person may be the sidekick/assistant, a witness, the police, a client, or a suspect. Don’t worry about “S.T.E.A.L.-ing” this second character.

• A mystery story should be realistic. There should be no supernatural, science fiction or fantasy elements to the story.

• Since you need to show your detective’s thoughts in this piece, the narrator should either be the detective (using the first person “I” voice) or a third person narrator who is NOT a character in the story.
