#BlackLivesMatter
Is Black Lives Matter a movement helpful for the black community, or is it detrimental to
the world? Recently, Fox News anchor Bill O'Reilly was asked about his thoughts on the Black
Lives Matter movement on his television show, ?
The O¡¯Reilly Factor. ?
O¡¯Reilly said that the
movement is ¡°a hate group¡± and that he is going to ¡°put them out of business.¡± Another Fox
News anchor, Kimberly Guilfoyle, backed up O¡¯Reilly¡¯s perception on Black Lives Matter,
saying that ¡°Their agenda is it¡¯s OK to go ahead and kill cops¡±. These comments made by these
Fox News anchors are unsupported, and also far from the truth. The only thing the Black Lives
Matter movement has done is help in the progression of racial equality for African?Americans in
America, through protests, marches, and community events.
Reasons why people feel as if Black Lives Matter is a hate group are because some of the
tactics they use are seen to be very aggressive and violent. For example, during a Bernie Sanders
speech in Seattle, a couple of women decided to interrupt Sanders, who at the time was talking
about fighting racism. The young Seattle women did not even give Sanders a shot to speak on his
thoughts about racism, and what precautions we must take in order to end it. Another example of
a ¡°violent¡± situation involving the movement is when, on a march, Black Lives Matter activists
were chanting ¡°Pigs in a blanket, fry ¡®em like bacon,¡± which caused major controversy. Some
felt as if the activists were attacking police officers. Again, this is the only reason why Black
Lives Matter even makes it to TV, to show why they should be classified as a ¡°hate group¡±
Though this movement does make some ridiculous decisions, it is our generation¡¯s Civil
Rights Movement. The movement has done a lot for the community and brought awareness of
police brutality in America. When Michael Brown was murdered by officer Darren Wilson, if it
was not for the Black Lives Matter activists, no one would be discussing the murder a year after
it happened. Black Lives Matter is also a ?
not ?
hate group. The goal of the movement is to change
the way the judicial system works against black people, even if the are victims of police
brutality. As a statement made by the movement reads: ¡°We¡¯re targeting the brutal system of
policing, not individual police. We seek a world in which ALL black lives matter, and racial
hierarchy no longer [organizes] our lives or yours...¡±
Ultimately, Black Lives Matter is also involved in many peaceful community events and
protests in order to spread awareness of police brutality. Recently in Cincinnati, the movement
hosted a block party in honor of both Samuel DuBose and QuanDavier Hicks, who were both
victims of being murdered by police officers. The block party consisted of food, dancing, music,
and guest speakers that were talking about what we need to do to stop the violence against black
men and women. Another example of the peacefulness of Black Lives Matter are the marches
that they do. When Michael Brown was murdered, he was unarmed and had his hands up, and
the movement created the saying ¡°Hands up, don¡¯t shoot¡±, and had PEACEFUL marches across
the United States.
Black Lives Matter has also kept social issues in the black community alive. If it was not
for them, then no one in the world would be aware of any violence against African Americans
across the United States. An example of this is the Trayvon Martin situation. Two years later, the
world is still talking about it, simply because Black Lives Matter shall not let it go until black
people get an equal opportunity in the judicial system, and in the world. But, many people do not
want to see the movement succeed. Many people that are not of African descent do not want to
see the movement succeed. Protesting against police brutality towards them, people that are not
black are claiming that Black Lives Matter is a ¡°hate group¡± and ¡°needs to be shut down¡±.
Those who believe that Black Lives Matter is a hate group is, simply, a
pseudo?intellectual. They believe that activists are out to kill police officers, when there is not
one instance of an officer being murdered by an activist. Many feel as if the goal of Black Lives
Matter is to kill police officers, and to be violent and be a disturbance in the world. Now, some
of the tactics are a bit extreme, such as the Bernie Sanders incident. Regardless, Black Lives
Matter is here to keep the awareness of police brutality against black men and women alive.
