Nigel Marven's Ugly Animals

Sunday, 4 January 2009

Ugly animals are rarely seen on our screens…until now. Join British naturalist Nigel Marven as he seeks out the ugliest animals

in the world. From wrinkled bats to naked mole rats and from ugly bugs to plump toads, we’ll find that appearances can be

deceptive. In a world obsessed with beauty, being ugly in the animal world has its advantages. For some animals being ugly makes

them more attractive to the opposite sex and in some cases, ugliness can make the difference between life and death.

The warthog is one of Africa’s ugliest animals. With its disproportioned shaped head, the warthog just looks odd. Its tusks,

sitting high and low on its face are both formidable weapons and tools that help search for a meal. Its warts – males have four

and females have two – are actually tough bits of gristly skin which if utilised in battle can actually save their lives.

The muddy swamps of Southern America are home to an ugly breed of turtle. With the most unattractive mouth, it resembles

something quite alien. The States is also home to an unusual breed of mole – the star nosed mole. They are the most sensitive of

the underground Earth moving creatures. Its snout, a ring of 22 tentacles, is actually super-sensitive and allows the mole to

hunt 14 times faster than other moles.

With their featherless heads, craggy beaks and unattractive folds of skin, vultures would have to be one of the ugliest in the

bird world. Their bald heads serve a purpose, preventing blood and gore being imbedded on them during feeding. But there is

another bird in Northern India that rivals the vulture for the title of ugliest bird – the rare Asian stork. Like the vulture,

they have bald heads also to help with their feeding as they are prone to not only dive for fish but also into mounds of

decaying rubbish. With numbers on the decline, the battle to save this unique bird is on.

Magnificent 7

Sunday, 4 January 2009

Meet the Jackson family, single mum Maggi (Helena Bonham Carter) and her seven children – four of whom suffer from a form of

autism, they are no ordinary family. Inspired by a true story - Magnificent 7 follows the trials and tribulations of the Jackson

family.

Single mother Maggi has her hands full with her seven children, especially her boys. Five-year-old Curtis (Thomas Redford) is

autistic and supersensitive to clothes, terrified of the colour red and is allergic to just about everything. Twelve-year-old

Christopher (Christopher Parkinson) suffers from Asperger syndrome which means he has a problem with anything that doesn’t say

exactly what it means.

Add to that eight-year-old Davey’s (Joshua Thurston) attention deficit, hyperactive disorder and older son Richard’s (Duane

Lomax) moods, provide a challenge for any mother. Thankfully she has the support and help of her three darling daughters;

Rebekah (Polly Thompson), Louise (Holly Grainger) and Elizabeth (Anna Sainsbury).

It’s Christmas and Maggi Jackson’s kids, mainly the boys, hate Christmas. Curtis shuts down at the sight of red, so Maggie

covers up his windows to keep the Christmas lights out and Davey helps his brother by stealing the batteries from the TV remote

to ‘keep the Christmas out’.

Assessment time comes around again and Maggi takes the boys to their annual check-up with the experts. With their specialist

tests and interviews they attempt to categorise the boys and determine just where they fit on the autistic spectrum.

Christopher makes a new friend when he meets the school caretaker Dmitri (Bruno Lastra). Dmitri seems to understand the world in

which Christopher exists and Maggi finds herself drawn to him.

Parents of autistic children often talk about life as an ‘autistic two-step’, constantly taking two steps forward and one step

back. This is very much the daily struggle Maggi endures, and Magnificent 7 provides testament to the struggles, disasters,

tears, laughter and triumphs faced by this family affected by autism.

Gangland Graveyard

Monday, 5 January 2009

Gangland Graveyard details the FBI’s dogged pursuit of one of the most notorious of all mob bosses – Joe Massino.

Massino rose through the ranks of the Bonanno family during the 80s and 90s to become ‘The Last Don’.

It took more than 20 years to finally nail Massino. He was eventually convicted of a vicious triple murder that rubbed out his

competition and catapulted him to become the top Bonanno.

The story begins at the end, when in 2004 the FBI led a three-week forensic excavation of an empty lot in Queens, New York,

searching for bodies and long buried secrets. What they discovered lifted the lid on the world of real-life Sopranos. Ultimately

a Mafia family would be crippled and a ruthless mobster brought down.

But the true details of the 1981 murders didn’t start coming to light until the FBI finally broke the code of silence and turned

capos and under-bosses on one another.

From inside the mob itself, FBI undercover agent Joe Pistone (aka Donnie Brasco), not only learned more than anyone else in law

enforcement ever had about how a Mafia family works, but he also helped secure more than 200 convictions. He was in ‘the family’

for nearly five years during a time of great unrest. This was not a job for the faint hearted.

Despite agent Pistone’s efforts, the FBI failed to nail Joe Massino on the hits until two new agents specialising in forensic

accounting finally hit pay dirt.

In 2004 Massino was finally convicted of murder but in a shocking twist he became an ‘effing’ rat – the first mob boss ever to

turn on the Mafia itself!

Capturing the Friedmans

Monday, 5 January 2009

Capturing The Friedmans was the winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. It’s a non-fiction feature

film that explores the elusive nature of truth through the prism of one of the strangest criminal cases in American history.

The Friedmans seem at first to be a typical family. Arnold Friedman is an award-winning schoolteacher, his wife Elaine, a

homemaker. Together, they raise their three boys in the affluent Long Island town of Great Neck.

One Thanksgiving, the family is gathered at home preparing for a quiet holiday dinner. In an instant, a police battering ram

splinters the front door and officers rush into the house searching every corner, seizing boxes of the family’s possessions.

Arnold and his 18-year-old son Jesse are both arrested, led away in handcuffs through a maze of newsmen, lights, cameras, and

trucks assembled in their front yard.

As a convoluted investigation unfolds, father and son are indicted for hundreds of shocking crimes. While the family vehemently

declares its innocence, the Great Neck community is in an uproar, and the Friedmans are the target of their rage.

The film follows their story – from the public’s perspective and, most remarkably, through unique footage of the family in

crisis, shot contemporaneously by family members inside the Friedman house.

As the police pursue the investigation, and the community reacts, the fabric of the family begins to disintegrate, revealing

disturbing questions about justice, community, family, and – ultimately – truth.

The Museum: Curators Of The Here And Now

Tuesday, 6 January 2009

In this episode of The Museum a curator has a stint in jail. The BM wants to inspire people who don’t usually visit the

collections, so they’re taking drugs to Pentonville Prison – all safely contained in an art installation. Meanwhile Venetia

Porter, a five-foot, shaggy-haired whirlwind, is being the guinea pig for another new policy. The Museum wants to show how

present cultures are just as important as the past, and her ambitious exhibition of modern art from the Middle East brings

together artists from across religious and political divides. Venetia likes being a guinea pig, but will her exhibition be a

success?

Stephen (Colin Salmon) tells Scott (Andrew Buchanan) that he’s been headhunted to help the flagging Labor by-election campaign.

Scott’s flattered and heads up to Sedley to assess the candidate only to discover that he’s unimpressed and uninterested in

Scott’s help.

James visits Ashika (Shelley Conn) in Sedley as she prepares for her first big public debate. Against his advice she comes out

in support of planning permission for a local mosque. Her decisive approach makes the Labor candidate, Sullivan, look out of

touch.

Kirsty (Andrea Riseborough) receives a threatening letter from an angry constituent who continues to stalk her. She’s later

distraught when the police inform her that he set fire to his wife’s home, injuring the whole family. She flees to Danny (Matt

Smith) and Scott’s flat where the hostility between her and Scott is barely concealed.

When Danny confronts Jo (Raquel Cassidy) about her excessive drinking, she reacts angrily, later relenting but refusing to seek

Hustle

Tuesday, 6 January 2009 Final

Our heroes are still on a high from their latest triumph (selling ‘The Ashes’ to a dodgy Aussie black-market dealer) when they

are hauled off to the police station on false drug charges by ambitious, fearless cop, DCI York (Ian Puleston-Davies). York’s

latest obsession is to catch notorious thief, Adam Rice aka ‘The Ghost’ (Paul Nicholls). His plan is to blackmail the gang into

doing his dirty work for him.

Relishing his ingenuity, York promises to free the gang when they deliver Rice. But until they do, he is keeping Albert (Robert

Vaughn) under lock and key.

Having weighed up their options, the gang attempts to make contact with Rice, who lives up to his elusive reputation. They have

to go to extraordinary lengths to track him down, and then when they eventually make contact they have to convince him to join

forces and pull off his next con together. Rice has been commissioned to steal a lost Hans Christian Andersen manuscript from

inside a security-tight country-house the next night. The arrangement is that Mickey (Adrian Lester) is to call York when they

are in the house and Rice has the manuscript, so that York can catch him red-handed.

However, York plans to arrest them all. With the security diverted, Rice, Mickey and Danny (Marc Warren) skydive into the

grounds. A bad landing puts Rice out of the game and they have to go in without him. York arrives to reel in his prize-catch,

only to discover they have outwitted him and disappeared into thin air. Rival police officer, Cooper (Charles Daish), arrives in

time to catch a horrified York at the scene of the crime.

The Omid Djalili Show

Wednesday, 7 January 2009 New Series

One of Britain’s best-loved and challenging stand-up comedians, Omid Djalili belly dances into his own comedy sketch show,

combining edgy cultural send-ups with memorable characters.

The Omid Djalili Show takes a swipe at modern-day life in a multicultural society. It reflects and builds on Omid’s successful

stand-up persona; part political, part social commentary and part plain silly.

The only Iranian comic to feature in his own show, the chunky, balding London-born Omid describes himself as the man who put the

fat into fatwa, the fun into fundamentalism and the ham into Hamas.

In episode one, his show’s running sketch includes Kebab the Musical which explores family tensions between first and second

generation immigrants and The Flamboyant Scottish Musical Director, who finds himself directing videos for unsuitable people

like Osama Bin Laden.

Everest ER

Thursday, 8 January 2009 New Series

For this team of doctors, patients include everyone from the elite of the world’s climbing communities, frostbitten and dying

from pulmonary oedema, to holiday trekkers with altitude sickness, and local children suffering from all the illnesses you might

expect to find in one of the world’s poorest countries.

These volunteers must make life and death decisions on a daily basis, a world away from the facilities of a modern hospital.

Evacuation from this altitude is either a two-day walk on the back of a porter or an expensive and dangerous helicopter ride.

Further up the valley, on the Khumbu Glacier itself, sits the Everest Base Camp Clinic. Everest’s magnetism is now such that in

the peak climbing season, Base Camp can be home to thousands of people. And at this altitude, getting sick is a very serious

business.

This gripping series follows the lives of these doctors over the course of one Everest season. When the clinic opens early

spring, there are queues of local people waiting to be treated. And as the season progresses, the big expeditions roll in – the

world’s best climbers, the rich businessmen paying to be guided to the top and the hordes of trekkers slogging up the valley to

worship at the feet of the world’s most spectacular mountain.

In episode one of Everest ER, summit season is about to start at Everest Base Camp. The doctors working at the highest hospital

in the world gear up to deal with a constant stream of life-threatening emergencies. With hundreds of climbers about to enter

the death zone, it’s only a matter of time before Everest claims its next casualties.

Who Killed Stalin?

Thursday, 8 January 2009

A complete re-appraisal of the death of the notorious 20th century dictator.

Was the official account of Stalin’s death a cover-up for what really happened? Secret KGB files are examined for the first

time to discover the truth.

Venerated as a god by many Russians and socialists worldwide, Stalin’s death in March 1953 sparked a public outpouring of grief

that bordered on hysteria. Officially, he was reported to have suffered a brain haemorrhage but the precise details surrounding

his death have provoked extensive debate over the years. Was he murdered?

Acclaimed historian Simon Sebag-Montefiore travels to Moscow to play detective in this compelling mystery. A former KGB

investigator analyses suppressed KGB files which suggest the official version of the death was a tissue of lies. So what really

happened? Can Stalin’s embalmer shed any light on events? What does a doctor make of the claim that he was poisoned? And if

Stalin did suffer a brain haemorrhage, would he have survived if medical help had been sought more swiftly?

Archive footage, dramatic reconstruction and computer graphics reveal the harsh reality of Stalinist Russia and witness

testimonies help reconstruct the lives and motives of the five key suspects. Was it one of Stalin’s two children, avenging their

mother’s death? Or Stalin’s foreign minister, Molotov, furious with Stalin for deporting his beloved wife and denouncing him?

What about Khrushchev, Stalin’s successor? Or could the culprit have been Beria, the head of the secret police, angry with

Stalin for publicly humiliating him and removing most of his powers?

Courting With Justice

Thursday, 8 January 2009

Posing the question “What if the Australian legal system was not based on the British model, but rather on one of the oldest

legal systems in the world, Indigenous Australian customary law?” Courting with Justice is a dramatic portrayal of the retrial

of a bar manager charged with the manslaughter of a young Aboriginal man.

Several years ago a former Norseman pub manager was charged with the manslaughter of Kevin Rule, a member of the Ngadju Nation,

but later found not guilty. The dead man's partner, Daniella Borg, is certain the manager's lethal punch killed Kevin and feels

the Australian judicial system has not provided her with justice.

Daniella has decided to have a re-trial. This time it is to be set on her husband’s traditional land, within the framework of

the oldest law in the country. The case is going before an Indigenous customary law court. Will the outcome be any different

than it was when the case was tried in the British-style Australian law courts?

The playing out of the customary law hearing itself is gritty and observational. The accused is not the actual perpetrator of

the crime, but is played by a white actor, The Dish’s Roy Billing. He is confronted, both in and out of character, by cultural

and procedural differences in the Indigenous customary law court.

A gritty drama-documentary, Courting with Justice takes a black perspective on dominant white legal systems, turning the tables

on how justice is done in Australia.
