Moms and Dads and Dogs Festival Mark your calendar for Saturday, June

8, noon to 2:30pm at BMW of Asheville on Fletcher Road. Then go. All proceeds will benefit the newly merged Animal Compassion Network (CAN) and Asheville Humane Society (AHS).

There will be live music by the Tarnished Rose Band, lots of good food provided by Acropolis Pizza, Gypsy Queen Cuisine and Norman's Ice Cream, and many vendors of all things dog ? including your friendly local publishers of PetGazette. Plus, expert dog trainer Steve Canady of Woof in the Woods will be there to pass on training tips for your dog.

The BMW Car Club will be there to show off some classic Beemers. And, of course, you'll have the chance to check out all of the latest BMWs, especially the X1, X3 and X5 that can be just the thing for transporting spouses, kids and dogs, not necessarily in that order. (Note: It has been suggested that the folk at BMW will give a free tennis ball with the purchase of a new BMW, but that had not been confirmed by PetGazette press time.)

All that is asked to participate in the 3rd Annual Moms and Dads and Dogs Festival is a donation of $5 and a bag of dog food per person ? all of which will benefit ACN/AHS. So don't miss it.

Need more details? Call the ever ebullient Joey Beckham at 828 681-9902, or 828 6468677. If she doesn't have the answer to your question, there probably isn't one.

Dogapalooza Benefit Concert at the Grey Eagle

This bash to benefit Brother Wolf Canine Rescue will be a blast. The Archrivals, Rory Kelly and Alarm Clock Conspiracy will all add their musical talents to the evening.

Tickets are just $8, available online at The Grey Eagle (. com/GreyEagleTavernandMusicHall/ calendar.aspx). Tickets are also available at Harvest Records and Orbit DVD in West Asheville.

The Grey Eagle doors will open at 7pm for this concert, and all ages are welcome to come and have fun. The Grey Eagle is at 185 Clingman Avenue in Asheville's River Arts District, about halfway between downtown Asheville and West Asheville.

Think about it. Just $8 for a night of great live sounds, a benefit for canine friends, and a very conveniently located and well-known musical venue. It doesn't get much better.

Putt for Mutts Charity Golf ? Friday, June 21

If you golf, you should go, whether you have a single digit handicap or you're handicapped by your swing. Join other golfing animal lovers for a 1 pm shotgun start at the Broadmoor Golf Links in Fletcher. The event, the 3rd Annual, will use a Captain's Choice format and will benefit the newly merged Animal Compassion Network and Asheville Humane Society.

There will be prizes for the top 30%

of the field, including golf packages and rounds at exclusive courses. (Golfers can increase their winning chances by purchasing mulligans and free throws. They are totally illegal under USGA rules, but totally recommended under ACN/AHS rules. They add to the fun and the benefit total for the animals.)

In addition to team prizes, there will be a hole-in-one contest on one of the par threes, and closest to the pin contests on three others. Every golfer will get a goody bag, and a boxed lunch to eat on the course with complimentary beer, water and soda. One lucky golfer will win a bunch of cash in a 50-50 raffle.

The low fee for all this fun is $85 per golfer registered before June 1st, $90 per golfer after June 1st. Twosomes cost $170 before June 1st, $180 after June 1st. Foursomes can register for $310 before June 1st, $340 after that. The registration fee includes green fees, cart, lunch and beverages. Plus the chance to meet some highly adoptable dogs from AHS.

Prestige Subaru, Broadmoor Golf Links, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, Happy Tails Country Club, and PetGazette are all supporters of the 3rd Annual Putt for Mutts. Join them in making the event the best ever for sponsors, participants and animals alike.

For more information, or to register, call 828 274-3647. And tell them PetGazette sent you.

New Year, New Itch--

Maybe!

by James E. Guenther, DVM, MBA, MHA, CVPM, AVA

Welcome to Spring 2013! The trees are blooming, the grass is growing, and a lot of animals have started to scratch, dig, lick, and self-mutilate, again! What's causing pets to do this? The answer is--it depends!

Itching, the common name for pruritus, is the most common symptom in skin problems. Itching may demonstrate itself by being a sharp discomfort and well localized, or it may be generalized over a larger portion of the skin. (Don't forget the ears are extensions of the skin). The urge to scratch starts with some chemical mediator within the host. Currently there are at least 18 different mediators that can start and/or perpetuate the itching cycle. But the real question is: What is causing one of these mediators to start the cycle?

The causes can range from skin parasites to anxiety. As with any pet medical condition, have it checked by your family veterinarian as soon as it is noticed. Be prepared for the visit with a history of when the symptoms started and when they occur. Does itching occur at a particular time of day? Does it seem to be seasonal? Have you changed food? Or, in short, what change in your pet's life could be the trigger for the itch? Common Triggers for Itching Skin Parasites:

Fleas are a constant and common source of skin irritation and itching for most pets. Have you put your pets on any of the monthly flea killing products? The many products available all do very well, but be sure to have your veterinarian confirm that your choice is the proper size and/or strength for your pet.

Another group of skin parasites are mites (Sarcoptic and Demodex). Sarcoptic is spread from dog to dog via contact, i.e. socializing with an infected animal. Demodex is not contagious and appears to be related to a stressed, immune compromised puppy. Both mites cause an intense itch and can be treated once diagnosed by your veterinarian.

Food Allergies:

Veterinarians are seeing more and more

pets with food allergies. The initial symptoms

of itching and licking appear to start around the

rear end and can also be seen with licking of

the feet. In addition, the coat might appear dull,

lifeless, and possibly dry. If you notice any of

these signs contact your veterinarian for his/her

advice, which may include a diet change.

Pollen:

This is a common trigger. It may be

seasonal and can demonstrate itself by the

pet itching a lot, or

even having runny

eyes, or continuous

licking of his/her feet

(contact allergy).

Once again, if you

notice any of these

signs have your

veterinarian check

your pet out.

The

above

are not the only

causes for an itchy

pet, but they are the most common ones

veterinarians will see. Any time your pet is

scratching, licking an area, or is vomiting or

has diarrhea, contact your veterinarian, as

these may be signs of an allergy. Make a

list of any and all symptoms you notice, as

well as any changes in their environment,

diet changes, or even previous histories of

possible allergy attacks. And be prepared to

aid in the discovery and cure for your pet's

itchy skin.
