Additional Role FactsheetPharmacy TechnicianPharmacy Technicians (PTs) are registered healthcare professionals who have long established roles in community pharmacy, secondary care and commissioning. Pharmacy Technicians traditionally work under the supervision of the pharmacist, and as registered professionals, are responsible and accountable for their own accurate and safe practice. In general practice, PTs are supporting pharmacists & GPs to focus on advanced skills by undertaking tasks such as medicines reconciliation on discharge, management of prescription queries and repeat requests. What makes these roles most effective in primary care settings? In the main, Pharmacy technicians should have “clinical, technical, and administrative” responsibilities within a PCN. They are also ideally place to support the delivery of some aspects of the contract DES service specifications subject to appropriate competency and training. PTs should have roles and responsibilities that make the best use of their skills and compliment those of a pharmacist. Examples of activities currently carried out by PTs across primary care include;ClinicalProvision of advice to GPs, staff and patients; management of queries to support patient safety; direct support to prescribing improvement programmes, quality and cost effectiveness. Complete medication reviews; Review clinic letters and complete medicines reconciliation; Support delivery local savings plans (e.g. switches and S1 report development); Audit delivery; Resolve medicines adherence issues; Deal with medicines information enquiries; Complete patient consultations; Provision of education and training. PTs should be advocates for medicines optimisation and safety and support the embedding of shared-decision-making and personalised care around medicines reviews and Enhanced Health in Care Homes. TechnicalReview repeat dispensing processes and implement electronic repeat dispensing; Support EPS implementation and changes; ePACT data analysis and audit; review and order blood tests (as appropriate).AdministrativeEffective communication with all health professionals across the PCN, Links with Community pharmacy teams to build relationships. Essential mandatory training and professional registration (and renewal period)Registered PTs are required to revalidate and renew registration annually (renewal date is subject to date of entry to the register).Mandatory training should be in line with local business and registration requirements. Continued support for medicines and skills related education, training and supervision is essential. For courses and available funded pathways seek advice from HEE, Our Dorset and the CCG Medicines TeamKey registering/ professional bodyGeneral Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)Anything we know about the pipeline of available talent in Dorset ICS?A Dorset wide pharmacy workforce strategy is in place to increase the pipeline of PTs available to Dorset. ‘Our Dorset’ directly supports and promotes recruitment plans and Dorset has measures in place to increase pre-registration PT numbers over the next few years. Cross-sector training places are being piloted in 2020/21 but workforce challenges within this cohort remain.Anything we know about what works when it comes to attracting, recruiting and retaining this talent? In recognition of workforce supply issues PCNs are not expected to recruit more than one additional individual pharmacy technician under the scheme in 2020/21 and 2021/22.
