Young Philanthropist Helps Feed The Hungry

How does an eight year old boy end hunger...by doing what he knows best, and what Myles knows best is music. From the age of four, Myles has been singing and playing the piano. He received the honored Oregon Composer Award twice and has performed with the Rogue Opera in Magic Flute and numerous other theatre productions in Ashland. Inspired by food drives and an article about ACCESS, Myles

recorded a CD titled If Music be the Food of Love to raise money for the needy.

Myles credits his 3rd grade teacher for igniting his enthusiasm. "Mrs. Murphy told us about people who were starving and had no shelter so we had a food drive for ACCESS," stated Myles. "When I got home from school, I was so upset that I emptied the pantry."

Sara-Lynne, Myles mother, recounts another emotional time when her and her son saw an article in the newspaper about ACCESS helping an elderly woman; "It reminded Myles of his Nana." You could see the love in Myles' face when he said, "Her 85th birthday is after Thanksgiving!" He went on to explain, "She doesn't have much

money and her medicine costs a lot so she has to budget for food, especially when I visit, because I eat a lot and she likes to feed me!"

With a passion to do more for the hungry, Myles decided to record a CD, sell it, and give half of the proceeds to ACCESS.

Myles is ten now, and after a year of recording at The Grove, a recording studio at the youth center in Ashland, Myles has finished his CD and hopes, by partnering with ACCESS, that his dream of helping the hungry will be accomplished. He wants to sell 100 CD's with half of the proceeds to go to ACCESS Food Share and the other half to be used for professional training to accomplish his goal of composing

Message from the CEO

"All who think cannot but see there is a sanction like that of religion which binds us in partnership in the serious work of the world."

-- Benjamin Franklin

During these challenging economic times, community partnerships are more important than ever and these partnerships can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. We state in our mission that our work is achieved "through partnership with a caring community," and we are proud of our Southern Oregon extended family which has helped in so many ways. Your generosity, commitment and advocacy are essential to ACCESS, and we strive to be excellent stewards of your resources. When our area is hit hard by a struggling economy, the hardest hit are our clients ? those who are low-income and living without life's essentials. Thanks to your partnership, we are able to serve these individuals and families in need. As a perfect example of one of the many different partnerships we enjoy, we're highlighting the extraordinary work of 10-year-old Myles, who is using his musical talents to help ACCESS and those we serve. We appreciate his work, along with his parents for instilling a caring, philanthropic attitude at such a young age. Another great instance of partnering is the recipient of our Hometown Hero Lifetime Achievement Award, the residents of Greystone Court, who have created an annual food drive that's provided over 386,000 meals.

We thank all of our partners for the many different ways they are contributing to our community. To learn more about how you can help, visit our website at access-

Warm regards, Gary

Meet the Board

Ken Williams VP, Senior Commercial Lender PremierWest Bank

Ken Williams has been a local banker in the Rogue Valley since 1984. He moved to this area to enjoy the life style that the Rogue Valley offers and to finish raising his family of 8 children. Mr. Williams's educational roots are from the states of Utah and Oregon, where he graduated from Utah State and attended the University of Oregon for his graduate studies. Ken has been on ACCESS's board since 2003. The two main reasons that he likes being associated with ACCESS are that we help people with a hand up not a hand out and that we have a low administrative cost to deliver our services.

Bruce Cartmel Region Manager Boise Wood Products, Western Oregon

Bruce has been with Boise Cascade since 1979 and transferred to Medford in December of 2005. As region manager, Bruce is responsible for seven wood product facilities in western Oregon and the administrative support staff. Facilities and staff comprise approximately 1000 employees, manufacturing wood veneer, plywood and lumber products.

Bruce has B.S. degrees in mining and industrial engineering from the University of Washington. He is President Elect of the board of directors of ACCESS. He has been married for 35 years; Bruce and his wife Pam have two grown children.

ACCESS Holiday Tradition

Earns Lifetime Award

The economic downturn may dampen spending, but it won't quell the spirit of the upcoming holiday season. During this holiday season more individuals and businesses than ever are finding ways to help out those who are less fortunate in our community by holding food drives. There certainly won't be a shortage of opportunities to contribute with more than 100 food drives expected this November and December. Here are two favorites that we would like to feature this holiday season. Look out for your grocery bags in either the Mail Tribune or the Daily Tidings on Monday, December 1st. Then just fill the bag with non-perishable food items drop it off at one of the listed drop off locations or send in a cash donation ($1 provides 5 pounds of food) to help a family in your community through ACCESS. Then on December 20?24, in response to the need for emergency food, the folks from Greystone Court will be calling you back to enjoy their Christmas light spectacular and join in the food drive. Listen to live caroling, receive a candy cane from Santa and revel in the spirit of Christmas. For two nights this year Starbucks will be joining in the festivities by handing cups of coffee or hot chocolate to Court visitors. Bring your whole family and enjoy this wonderful holiday tradition and help hungry families all across the valley by donating canned food or cash.

"Kids On A Roll

With JA" in 2009

Now's the time to form your 5-person bowling team and get ready to celebrate your fundraising success at the 2009 "Kids On A Roll With JA" Bowl-a-Thon fundraiser! Sponsored by Sterling Savings Bank, this is one bowl-a-thon where scores don't matter--it's all about how much money you raise for local Junior Achievement financial literacy programs. Team captains are invited to a special breakfast hosted by Rogue Regency Inn on January 10. Sterling Bank's Celebration Party will be on Saturday, April 18 at Lava Lanes in Medford. With prizes galore, bowlers should have run raising $50,000 to fund Junior Achievement programs for almost 5,000 Rogue Valley students in grades K-12. Don't delay! Interested team captains should call ACCESS JA today at 774-4334.

Bequest

A will is the cornerstone of a well-organized estate plan. In a will you determine how your estate will be distributed and how you will provide for your loved ones. Also, there are many ways to make gifts to charity while first providing for others. If you would like to create a charitable bequest in your will, please contact us for more information and the specific language that should be used. If you do not have a will, we suggest you take advantage of your financial and legal advisors to help you or feel free to contact ACCESS to assist you in preparing a will. For questions about wills and bequests, please contact Gary Miller at 774-4322.

background music for movies and video games.

If you would like to help Myles give the gift of food, music, and love to the hungry, call or come into the Development Department at ACCESS (779-6691). The CD (which sells for $12) includes his original, award winning composition Surviving Caldera Rapid on the Upper Klamath River and thirteen other songs from five centuries of famous composers, such as Bach. It will make a wonderful gift for the Holidays!

Look for Myles this spring singing Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem, Pie Jesu, with his sister for her senior project.

ACCESS Honors Hometown Heroes

Over 250 business, organization, and community members gathered at the Rogue Valley Country Club on October 29th as ACCESS recognized their commitment to improving the quality of life for Rogue Valley seniors, persons with disabilities, and families of low income. The ACCESS Hometown Hero Awards Banquet is held yearly to honor the top 25 local business, organization and community members whose dedication to helping people is evidenced by their major support of ACCESS programs for the year. Of these 25, eleven were chosen to receive a special award and one received our Lifetime Award recognition. This year's special award winners were: Adroit, Ashland Food Co-Op, Barnes Plumbing, COSTCO Wholesale, Jackson County Health and Human Services, Les Cracraft, Rogue Federal Credit Union, Rotary 1st Harvest, Rod and Joyce Witham, US Bank, and WAMU. ACCESS also paid special tribute to this year's "Lifetime Award" winner, Residents of Greystone Court, which are lead by Doug & Barbara Rush. This food drive is one of our very special food drives of the year and has grown to a must see event. The previous winners of our Lifetime Award are: Food 4 Less, Boise Cascade, Ed's Tire Factory, and Mail Tribune, whose faithful support of ACCESS goes back many years. Through their ongoing commitment to our community, they serve as a role model for others to follow. They all are truly...Hometown Heroes.
