ATLA Religion Database, ATLASerials & Religion and Philosophy Database Ebsco

Prepared by James M. Darlack

Go to:

(GCTS students may contact the library for info on usernames and passwords for off-campus access to this material)

Check all three databases, ATLA Religion Database, ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials and Religion and Philosophy Collection.

Click Continue.

Please note: if all databases are checked, you cannot browse lists of Scripture references that are indexed. If you wish to do so, only check one database at a time and see instructions below.

Click the Advanced Search tab.

To search for articles on a particular Scripture passage first type the book name and chapter in quotes in the Find: field. Then select SC Scripture_Citation in the drop down menu.

Click the Search button.

Next you are given a list of articles on that particular passage. If there are full text articles available online, there will be a note given with each citation. There are no full text articles in this search.

Note: If the “Publication Type” is an article, then the item is an article in a journal. If the “Publication Type” is an essay, then the item is an essay in a particular book.

You can also do phrase searches. If you place the phrase in quotes, the database will search for the exact phrase. If you do not place the phrase in quotes, the database will bring up all citations that have all of the words in any order.

If you search using Default Fields it will search for the phrase in all of the possible fields of each citation.

You can also search by author, title, etc.

This search has yielded citations that have full text articles attached to them. To view the full text article, click the link to the full text (Click either PDF Full Text, HTML Full Text, Linked Full Text or Click here for electronic resource.).

PDF Full Text displays with the most clarity.

To print, simply click the print button.

Note: if an article is linked to the citation using the link labeled “Full Text from ATLA: Click here for electronic resource”, as in line 17 above, then make sure that you take note of the page range for the article if you want to print. Then click the link.

To print, click the Print link.

Next, enter the page range in the fields labeled “Print from page ____to ____,” and click Redisplay.

Once all of the pages have loaded, use the browser’s File menu to print.

To search an index of Scripture references, go back to the Choose Databases screen by clicking the tab, or by pressing the back button.

Then uncheck all databases except one. It is good to start with ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials, because you will get the greatest yield of full-text articles. Though, you will want to search each database separately to get all full-text articles.

Then choose continue.

Note the extra green toolbar and options that appear on the top of the screen. These allow you to browse subjects, Scripture references, etc.

Click the “Scriptures” button.

In the “Browse for” field, type the name of the book of the Bible you wish to search for. For books such as 1st and 2nd Chronicles, 1st and 2nd Peter, etc., Type the name of the book, followed by a comma and then “1st, 2nd, or 3rd,” followed by the chapter number. See the example to the left: “Peter, 1st 1.”

The entries in the index are in alphabetical and NOT canonical order. So, for instance, “Samuel, 1st 14” would come before “Samuel, 1st 2,” because chapter 14 would come alphabetically before chapter 2. This also applies to verse numbers, so that “Peter, 1st 1:15” would come before “Peter, 1st 1:2” because verse 15 alphabetically comes before verse 2.

Scroll through the list and check off the Scripture citations listed that apply to the passage you are studying.

Do not click “Search” until you are finished scrolling through the list of Scriptures and have checked off all the ones you are interested in researching.

As you can see the verses you checked off are listed at the top of the page. They are also listed in the “Find:” field.

You can now narrow your search using the other “default fields” by choosing the language of the works you would wish to use or the type of publication you wish to search on.

For instance if you choose from one of the “Default Fields” drop down menus “LA Language” and type “English” in the field, you will weed out any works that are not written in English.

If you choose from the one of the “Default Fields” drop down menus “PT Publication Type” and type “essay OR article” you will only bring up essays found in books and articles found in journals. You will not bring up book reviews or book titles.
