MaxScholar Phonics Lesson Plan

MaxScholar Phonics Lesson PlanVisual/Kinesthetic Drill: Use sound cards to introduce each sound. Flip the card with each prompt: “this is the letter…as in… it makes the sound…”Tactile Auditory/Sound Drill: Show students how to trace the letter by making big motions with your arm or finger in the air. Then, have the students trace the letters on salt on a tray, and then on paper. As the letters are traced, the instructions should be said out loud, for example: “down, up, and around” (for the letter “p”).Sound Dictation: Dictate 10 letters/sounds to the student in random order, sometimes repeating sounds, and/or including sounds previously learned. You should say “write the letter that makes the sound… as in…” Then, the students will write them down while saying how they are tracing it (see step #2).Sound Blending/Tapping: Use sound cards and/or alpha chips to have students form words or nonsense words. They will tap each of the letters as they are sounding them out, and then they will scoop or trace a line while blending the sounds into words. You should say, for example: “form the word: tap”Fluency: Use the list of words to time each student individually for 60 seconds. Keep track of how many words are read in total, and how many mistakes are made. The final score will be the total amount of words that they read correctly.Sight Words: Introduce sight words by writing them in red on index cards. The words should be spelled and read for the student. Students should make their own index cards.Spelling Dictation: Choose 10 words from word list and dictate them to the students. The student will write them down. You should say, for example: “write the word “pat,” p-a-t”Sentence Dictation: Dictates a sentence and have the students say it back. Then ask them how many words are read. Then, have them write the sentence down.Controlled Reader: Use the controlled readers from the software or make your own. Read the story to the students, and then have them read it back to you.
