The Story of A Carbon Atom

The Story of A Carbon Atom

For this assignment, you will be writing a story about a carbon atom and its role in an ecosystem. You will be writing this book for a fifth through seventh graders studying life science. Your story should be entertaining and engaging, and contain words understandable to 9 to 11 year olds.

You will be working with two to three others on this book. The work should be divided equally within the group. Your book will have three main phases: researching and outlining; a rough draft; and a final draft. You should plan to meet with Ms. Bergman during lunch, after school or via email AT LEAST twice during this process. Failure to do so will result in a lowered grade! (3 points per time missed!)

THIS ASSIGNMENT IS WORTH A TEST GRADE. A RUBRIC is attached.

Your book will need:

• A Title and title page: Your title should be creative, relevant and spark interest for the reader. Your title page should include a graphic of your title; the authors’ names; the illustrators’ names; and the year.

• Your story should successfully detail AT LEAST two processes the carbon atom travels through, including photosynthesis and aerobic respiration. In addition, your story should successfully detail one abiotic process that carbon undergoes. (See the Carbon Cycle!) Your story should explain how respiration relates to photosynthesis as a complementary process.

• Your story should successfully detail AT LEAST one relevant system in animals involved in the intake or use of carbon (respiratory/circulatory or digestive).

• Your story should successfully detail how plants intake carbon through their stomata as well as the relevant anatomy of a leaf.

• ALL FACTS PRESENTED SHOULD BE ACCURATE AND RELEVENT TO THE ASSIGNED TOPIC.

• Your story should show thoughtful research beyond class notes and the textbook. You should utilize the internet, the SWW library and online resources, and the texts in Room 201 (Ms. Bergman’s room) to complete this assignment. Your target should be using no fewer than TEN different resources. You will need to provide a list of these resources in MLA formatting. Come see me if you have problems with MLA citation. Projects without works cited pages can earn NO MORE than a C- on the project!

• Your story should have neat original illustrations. YOUR ILLUSTRATIONS MUST BE ORIGINAL! These can be hand-drawn, computer-generated, collage, etc.

• Your story should be neat, with correct spelling and grammar.

• Your story should be creative without sacrificing focus on the subject matter.
