Photosynthesis Children's Book Project Biology

Due Date________________

"If you can't explain it to a 6 year old, you don't understand it yourself." ? Albert Einstein

Your mission is to create a children's book or an animated comic strip to explain photosynthesis. You will be required to explain (on a young child's level) how photosynthesis works and why it is so important. You need to create characters, illustrations and a creative story line. You can create complete characters or just personify the structures required to be discussed. Your book(let) or comic strip must include illustrations, which can be handdrawn or printed. Your book(let) or comic strip must be colored, legible, professional and appropriate. Since this is meant to be a children's book story, the text should be simple and flow like a story rather than a set of bulleted biology notes!

The following structures & topics must be included in your book:

Chloroplasts Chlorophyll Stroma Thylakoids Electrons The light reaction (including reactants and products) The Calvin cycle (including reactants and products)

If you have an idea other than a children's book (i.e. a rap, poem, song, play, etc.), that can work as well as long as it satisfies the requirements on the rubric.

Requirements

Source of energy, photosynthesis equation, where it takes place (organelle, pigment, organism) LightDependent Reaction

Calvin Cycle

Creativity

Illustrations, Neatness

5 pts Book contains relevant material describing the general chemical equation for photosynthesis, that sunlight is needed and that photosynthesis occurs in the chlorophyll of chloroplast in plants Story explains the light reaction in simple language. Describes where it takes place and the reactants and products. Should include: the role of photosystem I and II, electron transport, splitting of water, formation of ATP and NADPH. Story explains the Calvin Cycle in simple language. Describes where it takes place and the reactants and products. Should include: rubisco, RuBP, carbon dioxide, PGA, PGAL, and glucose. Project is very creative, is written as a story rather than a set of biology notes, etc.

Includes a cover page. Colored illustrations included on each page. Text is typed (recommended) or very legibly handwritten

4 pts Missing one of these requirements or not enough description.

At least 1 error or missing component

At least 1 error or missing component

3 pts Missing at least two of these requirements or hardly described.

At least 2 errors or missing components

At least 2 errors or missing components

Project lacks creativity, but displays a sincere effort Missing 2 of the requirements

0-2 pt Missing 3 or more requirements or barely mentioned.

3 or more errors; cycle is very poorly or erroneously depicted.

3 or more errors; cycle is very poorly or erroneously depicted.

Simply lists steps without significant effort for creativity Missing 3 or more of the requirements

On time, include rubric: 5 pts.
