ALTA LOMA HIGH SCHOOL

Physical Science Teacher: Mr. Jerome Evangelista Room: 1204

I.COURSE DESCRIPTION: Physical Science is a course that explores the relationship between matter and energy. Students investigate physical science concepts through an inquiry-based approach. Embedded standards for Inquiry, Technology & Engineering, and Mathematics are taught in the context of the content standards for Energy, Matter, Motion, and Forces.

II. GRADING PROCEDURE

A. All work will be graded on a percentage basis, using the following scale.

|Percent Correct |Letter Grade | | | |

|90-100% |A |3.50-4.00 | | |

|80-89% |B |2.50-3.49 | | |

|70-79% |C |1.50-2.50 | | |

|60-69% |D |1.00-1.49 | | |

|Below 60 |F |0-.99 | | |

B. Graded work will consist of:

1. TESTS - Each test will cover lecture notes (Seatworks), warm-ups and any lab or group activity (report).

2. CLASSWORK - Classwork will be given when appropriate (group or individual). Class notes (Seatwork) will be collected on the day of the unit test for credit.

3. LAB REPORTS/PROJECTS – the lab report is individual, you must complete the lab report handed to you. Lab reports will be turned in before you leave the room.

4. WARM-UP ACTIVITIES - Every day there will be activity that will be posted on the white board. Upon entering the room, the student must be prepared to conduct the activity.

C. QUARTER GRADES Quarter grades will be a weighted average of the scores on the assignments given. Different types of assignments will be given different emphasis. The table below lists the weight given to each category.

|Graded Work |% of quarter grade |

|Tests |35% |

|Classwork |20% |

|Homework |5% |

|Lab Reports/Projects |25% |

|Quizzes |20% |

D. SUGGESTIONS

1. Everything you do in this class will be graded, so it is important to do every assignment and to turn them in. Partial credit will be given. Lack of effort will affect your grade.

2. CHEATING is forbidden. This includes blatant copying, and "borrowing" homework. Both parties involved will be given a zero on the assignment, parent contact will be made, and other disciplinary action may be taken. I will follow the guidelines given in the student handbook. You should review these policies.

3. DO NOT throw away your assignments. They will be handy for studying for the test and semester exam.

4. If there is something that is unclear, ask questions! I will be available before or after school most days to give extra help.

B. MAKE-UP WORK

1. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up all the work you missed. You have the same number of days that you were absent to turn in the missing work. See me before class for the missing work.

2. Pick up any missing work, and notes before or after class.

3. Hand in the make up work separately from other assignments.

4. If you miss a test or quiz, it must be made up outside of class, before or after school. If you are absent the day before a test, you may make up the test on your own time.

C. LATE WORK

1. If you forget to bring in your homework, I will accept it ONE day late with a parent's signature, for full credit. This is limited to twice per quarter.

D. ATTENDANCE

IV. Expectations:

1. School Rules are to be followed at all times.

2. Be respectful of yourself, your classmates and your teacher.

3. Be prepared for class, and seated when the bell rings.

4. No eating in the classroom unless authorized to do so. No drinking during lab work.

5. Maintain your integrity by always acting in a responsible and honorable manner.

V. Laboratory Work:

A safety contract will be handed out and must be signed by both student and parent and returned to the teacher before the student may work in the laboratory. All laboratory work, including handouts for the activity should be kept in the 3-ring binder used for chemistry class. Safety is of utmost importance in a Physical Science laboratory and I want to ensure that all participants to remain safe at ALL times!

VI. pHYSICAL sCIENCE Binder:

All work in Chemistry class should be kept in a 3-ring binder. The binder will be divided into the following sections in tabs:

·Seatworks

·Study Guides

·Quizzes

·Homework

·Warm-ups

· Lab Work

·Other

▪ Tabs should be properly labled.

▪ Daily warm-ups should be kept in the warm-up section of the notebook, and each warm-up must be dated at the top of the page.

VII. Notebook Checks:

Notebook checks will be randomly implemented throughout the year, and will contribute to a students “class work” grade. This will be done in effort to keep students organized and up to date with their work. If a student feels as though they need help with their organizational skills, they may see me at any time for suggestions.

Note for Parents:

It is my intention that all of my students be successful in my class. However, I alone cannot assure success. Please encourage your child in assuming responsibility for his/her learning. Please urge your child to study every night and check the school web page for homework.

My best to you,

Mr. Jerome Evangelista
