Course Description:

Life Science is the

The course will be divided into the FIVE following major units; each addressing performance standards as set by the State Department of Education:

1. Motion and Forces, Simple Machines, Fluids

2. Energy and Matter, Foundations of chemistry, energy resources

3. Properties of Matter, Periodic Table, elements and chemical bonds

4. Interaction of Matter, Chemical Reactions and Equations, acids and bases

5. Waves, Electricity, and Magnetism. Light, Sound

Grading Procedures:

Nine-week averages will be calculated from labs, daily work and tests/projects.

Daily assignments/homework - 15% of the grade

Labs/quizzes - 20% of the grade

Tests/projects - 50% of the grade

9 week Exam - 15% of the grade

9 week averages will be calculated as follows: 85% of the 9 week average will be comprised of the students test, quiz, and daily assignments. 15% will comprise of the 9 week exam that will be given at the end of each 9 week period

* All parents are encouraged to sign up for INOW to monitor the progress of your child. The front office at the High school can be contacted for further information.

* Current grades will be made available on a weekly basis with the exception of major tests and/or projects which may take longer to evaluate.

* Progress Reports will be sent home every 4 ½ weeks in order for you to see a hard copy of the students’ grades.

Student Expectations:

The Student will be expected to…

1. Abide by all school policies written in the school handbook.

2. Be on time to class

3. Be courteous at all times.

4. Be equipped with all necessary materials.

5. Complete tests and assignments in the allowed time.

6. Participate in all classroom activities.

7. Be on best behavior during lab activities to help insure safety for all.

8. Make-up any missed assignments due to an excused absence within the allotted time.

• Colored pencils



Grades for this course are also based on the following levels of performance:

| |and research; Prepared for some of the labs by reviewing the material, but still relied on lab partner for |

| |help; Produced good work; Reviewed material, but probably not regularly; Earned a grade of 80 or higher. |

|C |Read some of the assigned work; turned in all work, most not on time; Needed help and extra time to |

| |complete projects and research; Relied heavily on lab partner during labs, rather than reviewing; Produced |

| |average work; Did not review material regularly; Earned a grade of 70 or higher. |

|D |Students did the bare minimum for completion of work and did not meet the goal of turning in homework or |

| |assignment on time on a regular basis. |

|F |Did not read assigned work; Did not turn work in on time or successfully complete major projects or |

| |research; Did not review material and produced below-average work or none at all. Scored below a 60 on most|

| |tests and earned a grade of less than 60 for the course. Course will have to be repeated. |

For Your Information:

Absences and Make-Up Work: All work missed due to absences will be handled per procedures outlined in the NBHS Student Handbook.

Homework: Homework is given in order to help reinforce that days information or to help students gain a preview into the information that will be given in the future. All homework has a reason as of why it has been given. Yes! It is important, and Yes! All homework will be graded in some form or fashion.

Quizzes: Will always be announced. No Surprises… Keep up with your notes and pay attention in class and quizzes should be an easy grade.

Projects: Will be discussed thoroughly in class and some class time will be devoted to them. Much will be done in class some will be done on your own time. If problems arise, plan to meet with me before or after school if necessary for one-on-one help. If you know you are going to be out the day the project is due, then it will need to be submitted prior to the due date.

Tests: Will be announced on the schedule board no later than 3 days prior to administration. There is no excuse for not knowing when a test will be given! If you are absent the day before you the test, you will still take the test with the rest of your classmates on the test day!!!

Academic Honesty: Academic dishonesty, such as cheating, plagiarism, etc. will NOT be tolerated. Plagiarism includes any copying and pasting of information from books and/or internet resources and submitting it as the student’s own work!! Cheating (including copying homework answers) as well as plagiarism will result in a zero for that assignment. If you are caught copying answers from a classmate in your class or from another period, both students will be given a zero for that assignment.

Make up and extra help policy: The school’s make up policy for absences (found in the student handbook) will be adhered to. Students needing extra help can also talk with the teacher and help will be provided at an agreed upon time.

Book bags/purses: Book bags and/or purses must be kept in a LOCKER and are not allowed in the classroom. Students are to be sure to get everything they need for each class during class transitions. No book bags will be allowed in the hallway outside of the teachers’ door.

LATE WORK: Students will be given adequate time to complete all assignments. It is highly recommended that parents check their child’s agenda daily for due dates for various assignments. Using the App REMIND, notifications will be sent as a reminder via Text message and/or email of upcoming due dates. Late work will be to the teachers’ discretion depending on students’ individual situations.
