PHYSICAL SCIENCE SYLLABUS

COURSE NAME: Physical Science

Course Description: This course is designed to serve as a foundation for other high school science courses. It will emphasize the basic laws of chemistry and physics. Laboratory and problem solving activities will be utilized to cover the curriculum. This course will include the following units:

 

▪ Scientific Inquiry

▪ Properties and Classification of Matter

▪ Structure and Properties of Atoms

▪ Chemical Bonding and Reactions

▪ Forces and Motion

▪ Nature, Conservation, and Transfer of Energy

▪ Nature and Properties of Mechanical and Electromagnetic

GRADING:

Daily accountability (Homework) - 20 % - There is no make up on homework. Homework needs to be completed on the due date so the student can be prepared to do the classwork for that day. Once answers have been gone over in class, homework will not be accepted.

Quizzes - 10% - Both announced and unannounced. They will be short and vary in format and pertain to what was done in class on previous days.

Labs -25% - The labs will be started in class and often finished for homework. Labs may not be made up out side of school you must make all labs up in my room to receive credit.

Tests - 25% - Tests will be cumulative.

Projects - 20% - Projects will vary some may be group oriented others individual Student are given some class time to work on projects however they are expected to do most of the work at home. Other smaller projects will also be assigned with ample notice for completion. PROJECTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED LATE!

CLASSROOM POLICIES:

• Since the class consists mainly of hands on work and labs, attendance is very important. Students should attend class daily. Most of the labs cannot be made up at home so if a student misses class they will have to come in at lunch or before school to make up the work. Students need to come in and complete any missed works as soon as possible.

• If you are ABSENT please check the web page for what you missed.

• Students are to treat each other and the teacher with respect and they should expect to be treated the same way.

1. Do not disrupt when other students are presenting or asking question.

2. Remain in your seats until the bell rings. DO NOT gather at the door.

3. Copying someone else’s work is CHEATING. Cheating will not be tolerated.

4. NO CELL PHONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

• Students should come to class prepared with the assignment for the day as well as book, paper, writing utensil, and student handbook.

GRADING SCALE

A = 93 – 100

B = 85 – 92

C = 77 - 84

D = 70 – 76

F = 0 - 69

CLASS SUPPLIES:

Students need a 3-ring notebook (1 inch) , tab dividers, a package of colored pencils and a package of magic markers. Check Supply Handout.

OFFICE HOURS:

I am available at lunch or before school by appointment.
