Walker Email: z.zahur@ Room: C21 Course Description: Students explore principles of Newtonian mechanics (including rotational motion); work, energy, and power; mechanical waves and sound; and simple circuits. The course is based on six Big Ideas, which encompass core scientific principles, theories, and processes that cut across traditional boundaries and provide a broad way of thinking about the physical world. AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 are the equivalent of the first and second semesters of introductory college courses. Because these courses are intended to be yearlong courses, teachers have time to foster deeper conceptual understanding through student-centered, inquiry-based instruction. Students have time to master foundational physics principles while engaging in science practices to earn credit or placement. A strong knowledge of algebra and basic trigonometry is required for the course; the basic ideas of calculus will be introduced in connection with physical concepts, such as acceleration and work. Course Objectives: This course prepares the student to pass the Advanced Placement Physics 1 test in May and will prepare students for AP Physics 2 or any future Physics classes taken in college. Policies: Cheating: Students who cheat on a test or assignment will be given a “0” grade for that test or assignment. Further consequences will be discussed on a need basis in a parent-teacher-admin meeting. Tardies: Students who are tardy will receive a lunch detention or other after school physics related work. Repeated offenses will result in administrative action as well. Homework: Nightly assignments will be given. Assignments are due as per the mastering physics platform. Late work will receive no more than ? credit. Students are encouraged to finish all work even after the due date to receive partial credit. Assignments not completed by the test will be severely penalized. No work will be accepted after the test for the given unit. Make-up work: There will be a one day extension for assignments and tests for each day of verified excused absence. There is no make-up for unexcused or unverified absences. Excessive absences on or near the test day will require direct parental contact for make-up work to be accepted. Students absent on the day of a test must take the make-up exam upon the day of return and will not receive an extra credit question or a curve for the test if applicable. Cell Phones: Cell phones are not to be out during class except for the very specific purposes that I announce in class. Students who have cell phones out during class when not allowed or are using their phone for non-class activities will be subject to having their phones taken away. Class Website: News, photos and videos of the Physics club events and class activities will be posted there. This page will have our class calendars for HW and tests, lab and HW worksheets, videos and links to numerous useful and fun Physics sites. Grading Scale: A: 90-100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: Below 60% Grades are calculated according to the percentages given above (Page 1). Remember grades can be checked on Aeries by students and parents at any time. I will update the grades after every test. As with all AP courses, AP Physics 1 is a weighted grade for GPA calculations. Grades: Unit Tests and Quizzes: 60% of the grade. Unit Tests: Given at the end of each unit and kept on file at school. Quizzes: May be given at any time. Assignments: 40% of the grade Homework: HW will be assigned nightly. We will be using the mastering physics platform to do our homework assignments. The credentials to this platform will be given in class. Labs: There will be at least one laboratory period per unit, more if at all possible. These labs will be completed in class and write-ups will be turned in one or two days later. Make-up labs are to be done by appointment only. Format of write-ups will be explained with each lab. Activities: These will consist of various types of tasks—demonstrations, review problems, supplemental problems, video, worksheets, etc. Class work: At the beginning of many class periods, there will be a short assignment to be completed at that time. These questions will deal with concepts of physics and may be on any topic. Textbook: Students will be given an electronic version of our textbook through mastering physics. Supplies Needed: Scientific or Graphing Calculator (See College Board Approved Calculator List) USB drive to save lab data (optional) Lecture Notebook (5.08cm 3 Ring Binder): Each student will keep a separate notebook for this class. Notebooks will be worth 50 Test Points and will be collected near the end of each quarter (approx. 10 weeks). Notebooks should contain a cover page and the following labelled sections (with dividers) in order: Curriculum Letter (This Document!) Class Notes (Unit 1 to Unit 8) –use sub-dividers for each unit Class Activities (Small classwork activities/worksheets)AP Review (Special HW assignments given in class which includes Finals and AP Review content)TIPERs (Special HW assignments).Lab Notebook (Composition Book): Each student will need a separate small lab notebook for this class. Lab write-ups will be done in this notebook. Physics ClubPhysics Club is an optional club where students participate in lunch-time activities related to various physics topics. All current physics students are part of physics club (no sign-up necessary). Students may earn extra credit just by participating. Check the class white board for upcoming physics club activities. LaptopsStudents are required to bring their laptops to school fully charged everyday. We will use the laptops occasionally for our class. Students are allowed to take notes on the laptop using the stylus only. Students may not type up their notes barring any IEP or 504 accommodation. Laptops are used only for school work. Violations will result in negative consequences at my discretion. I have thoroughly read and understand the policies for Mr. Zahur’s AP Physics 1 class.
