Course Description

Study and performance of specific solo and collaborative piano repertoire, with additional evaluation in piano pedagogical content and methodology, career promotion, philosophies of music, and assessment of personal achievements in the various fields of piano.

Goals

The goals of the course are to prepare pianists to:

• Perform music effectively with knowledge of historical and theoretical context

• Develop multiple approaches to learning, memorization, and musical thought

• Prepare for and secure future engagements as a pianist, accompanied by also securing the confidence of understanding the administrative structures, responsibilities and expectations involved in these engagements

Objectives

At the completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Study and perform solo and collaborative pieces (using both reading skills and memorization skills) through a variety of modes based on piano technique, theory, history and personal interpretation.

2. At the minimum, play all major and minor scales and understand key signatures (more advanced students will be held responsible for other technical concepts).

3. Sight read, playing from the beginning to the end of a work, without stopping.

4. Discuss particular piano works in regard to structure, harmony, melody rhythmic content, and other musical parameters.

5. Set short-term and long-term performance goals.

6. Accompany and collaborate successfully with fellow musicians.

7. Write program notes and press releases.

8. Compile a professional resume

Performance Opportunities

We are fortunate to have many venues in which to try out new pieces, old pieces, or simply gain experience in performing the works you will study in class. Recital situations are listed below in the syllabus for those taking individual piano lessons. Attendance is required (and please invite your students, friends and families!).

Midterm Expectations

By now, many of you as musicians know that last minute preparation does not warrant successful performances. We as pianists are to do more than simply hit the right notes; one can only begin to understand and execute many more musical ideas when not consumed with the memory process. In order to assist you with this philosophy, a midterm test will be given. During the week of midterms, you will be required to play all of your jury pieces from memory as a midterm “exam.” The score of this exam will count 5% toward your final grade for this class.

• 90-100 points = A = Pieces memorized and played with an understanding of musical form, phrase structure, dynamic levels and some personal musical interpretation.

• 80-89 points = B = Pieces generally memorized, but with a few memory slips and room for growth related to execution of musical form, phrase structure, dynamic levels and personal musical interpretation.

• 70-79 points = C = Pieces very shaky memory-wise, and no understanding of musical form, phrase structure, or dynamic levels. No previous thought of musical interpretation.

• 60-69 points = D = Pianist is not able to get from the beginning to the end of the piece.

• 50-59 points = F = Pianist must use music and has no conception of the piece whatsoever.

Collaboration

The piano area must constantly play a larger role in collaborative performance. As this skill is essential to the successful pianist in today’s musical world, all of you will be assigned a chamber music piece at the beginning of the semester. Dr. Jones will do everything possible to ensure a successful chamber ensemble. These pieces will be piano duos, piano trios, piano quartets, piano quintets, or chamber music emphasizing a solo instrument or solo voice with the piano also playing a huge part in the ensemble. These pieces will demand the piano majors’ full attention—as much as any solo repertoire piece being studied in the studio. Friday afternoon coachings by Dr. Jones from 2:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. will be offered to groups every week, with the groups coming into the studio (Room 436) on a rotating basis. There will be a mandatory chamber music recital in the Recital Hall at the end of the semester. This collaborative performance, in conjunction with regular attendance at coachings as well as a written practice log of your groups, will represent 10% of your final grade in this class.

Pre-Recital Hearings

If you are playing a recital, degree or non-degree, Professor Oscar Macchioni, Professor Ruben Gutierrez and I will need to hear a pre-recital hearing four weeks prior to the recital. For the pre-recital hearing, any piece on the recital may be called for our preview. Once this pre-recital hearing has been approved, the recital is ensured to take place.

Expectations and Grading

Grades are based on

• Attendance and punctuality for lessons and Master Class; and if absence is necessary, the amount of effort shown toward notifying me if unable to attend lesson and/or Master Class.

• Quality and quantity of practice as evidenced by progress from lesson to lesson.

• Completing all assigned pieces and technical studies by the end of the semester.

• Completing all assigned homework as required by class instructor.

“A”: Consistent work and continued progress throughout the semester

“B”: As above, but reflecting less than consistent work throughout the semester, poor preparation that has the potential for improvement

“C”: Inconsistent work, poor attendance or punctuality, and/or lack of participation.

“D”: Inability to produce any positive results regarding performance or homework assignments.

“F”: Failure to attend lessons and master class, or failure to show any work or preparation.

Grades will be earned through the completion of the following activities and assignments with the grade weighting designated:

Attendance Policy

Lessons will be held in Music 436, Fox Fine Arts Building. Please knock on the door at your lesson time. If you are ill, please notify me as early as possible by leaving a message at my email address, my office number, or at the Music Department Center Office (747-5606). If I am ill, I will have the office post a sign on my door in addition to contacting you as soon as possible.

Until taken for granted, missed lessons will be rescheduled, and in the event that I miss a lesson, be assured that I will offer a make-up schedule for your consideration.

Because of the nature of the applied class, frequent attendance is a must for the successful student. Most aspects of the final grade result from in-class activity and lesson improvement throughout the semester. Therefore, students cannot get a good grade if they are not in lessons/master class and contributing to class and group discussions. Nor can those students who miss out on class and group discussions or lectures expect to successfully complete assignments or exams. Therefore, the student who is flourishing in Applied Piano Studies is the student who attends regularly.

When a student has compiled a total of four instances of unsatisfactory attendance, he/she will be dropped with a “W” from the course prior to the drop deadline or fail the course after the drop deadline.

Drop deadlines are determined by the university and exact dates can be found online.

The only excused absences will be absences from university-sanctioned events (athletic events, concerts, etc.), emergency illness, a religious-affiliated absence, jury duty, or a funeral for a member of your family. Documentary proof of all five of these circumstances must be provided before or immediately after the fact. If you know that you will be absent from class, it is your responsibility to hand in assignments before your absence. The instructor will not accept late homework.

Students are expected to be in the classroom during the entire class period. Excessive tardiness (coming in 10 minutes after the beginning of class) or leaving the classroom early—unless approved ahead of time with the instructor—will result in an absence.

Students not meeting the above attendance requirements will be dropped from the course. Students dropped before the Course Drop Deadline, will be dropped with a “W”; after the deadline, students will be dropped with an “F”. Remember that your instructor cannot drop you after the drop deadline date.

Your instructor may choose to make an exception to the above policies if she deems the circumstances warrant it.

Repertoire Guidelines

The piano is perhaps an instrument which has the most repertoire written for it. Many of the great composers were pianists—excellent pianists—and therefore the canon, in addition to being vast and comprehensive, is also an educational tool in regard to compositional style, aesthetic and performance practice of musical periods, and individual masterpieces of keyboard music by composers. What follows is a general breakdown of the various pieces found in the mainstream of classical piano pedagogy and performance in higher education. Many of these pieces can be performed at differing levels and this listing should not be viewed as absolute: thus the term guideline.

First Year, MUSA 1391

In this studio, it is the goal that all major and minor scales (natural, harmonic and melodic) will be performed accurately and with facility in sixteenth notes, hands together four octaves, = 60. All key signatures and major and minor relationships must be understood. Technique study will be a major emphasis and repertoire which promotes the development of memory and musicianship will also be assigned. Students will begin working on a collaborative four-hand piece in the first semester and may perhaps advance to a collaborative two piano four-hand piece or a duo with another instrumentalist/ vocalist in the second semester. The introduction of the piano concerto may also be given in the second semester. Sight reading goals are to play at the reading level of Clementi Sonatinas (being able to notice Alberti bass, scales, arpeggios with altered pitches and challenging hand positions/finger number switches).

In this studio, it is the goal that all major, minor, dominant seventh and diminished arpeggios will be performed accurately and with facility in (triplet) sixteenth notes, hands together four octaves, with

= 72. All key signatures and major and minor relationships must be understood. Technique study will still be a major emphasis and repertoire which promotes the development of memory, longer and more complex repertoire and higher demands regarding musicianship will also be assigned. Students will begin working on collaborative duos and trios. Sight reading goals are to play at the reading level of Romantic miniatures, such as simpler Mendelssohn Songs Without Words (being able to notice chromaticism, chords, modulations and even more challenging hand positions/finger number switches). Goals also include comfortable sight reading of chamber music works, including vocal score. Piano Pedagogy is recommended as an elective course. Students must pass a double jury consisting of 30 minutes of music before advancing into the upper applied music study.

(The student has three consecutive semesters to successfully pass the second year double jury. New music is required for each subsequent jury performance. Failure of the third attempt will result in a dismissal from the piano major program.

Technique study will now be emphasized with direct repertoire which 1) promotes the development of memory, 2) is longer with more complexity and 3) contains higher demands regarding musicianship will also be assigned. Students will begin working on collaborative duos, trio, quartets and quintets. Sight reading goals are to play at the reading level of more melodically and harmonically developed pieces, various clef reading, and pop chord chart reading. Piano Pedagogy continues to be a recommended elective course, as so does Group Piano for Piano Majors, which will also include a segment of piano improvisation. It is highly recommended that the piano student learn a piano concerto. Other areas which may be introduced include recording and competition experience. For performance majors, a 30 minute recital must be successfully passed in order to advance to the fourth and final year of piano study.

Technique study will now be indiscernible from repertoire: all will require comprehension of memory, longer and more complex works with higher demands regarding musicianship. Students will be working on difficult chamber music repertoire for collaborative duos, trio, quartets and quintets. Sight reading goals are to play anything not out of the ordinary (Legeti etudes, for example, would not be successfully sight read). In addition to the continuation of chamber music, pedagogy, recording and concerti study, competitions may be encouraged, as well as outside, professional performance opportunities and summer music festivals. Other projects in career development may include constructing a curriculum vitae, CD projects, promotion and auditions for graduate programs. For performance majors, a 60 minute recital must be successfully passed in order to graduate. For music education majors, a 30 minute recital must be successfully passed in order to graduate.

(The student has two consecutive semesters to successfully pass the final recital (see recital hearing requirement above). New music may be required for each subsequent attempt (This decision is to be determined by the Piano Area Faculty). Failure of the second attempt will result in a dismissal from the piano major program.
