Hello MESA Families!

MESA TIMES

Summer 2020

Hello MESA Families!

Hope you are all staying healthy and sane during these interesting times. I hope everyone has found a way to connect with friends and make the most of their summers, even without Mesa!

Many local pools have opened with special COVID guidelines in place. If your swimmers are looking to get back in the water, most pools in the Boulder area are offering `reserved lap swim' times for members. Private and semi-private lessons are another option and some swim teams are operating on a limited group size basis. Below are some options to consider if your swimmer(s) are anxious to get back in the pool!

GRADUATING SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Avery Johnson

How long have you and your family been on the team? I have been on the team for 12 years, my family, through my mom's coaching, has been on the team for 18 years. How old were you when you joined Mesa? I was six. What are your favorite memories as a Mesa swimmer? One of my favorite memories was having Michael Lenssen and Kieran Lenssen coach for Mesa at the same time, as they had both been my big swimmer at some point. Nathan Lenssen was my coach in 11-12's too. What has swimming meant to you? It has formed friendships for me that I never would have had if it were not for swim team, both on Mesa and my high school swim team. People come together from all walks of life and connect through this sport. What are your plans for the fall? My plans for this fall are to attend Puget Sound University in Tacoma, Washington. I plan on studying music education with an emphasis in vocal performance. Do you plan to swim for fun or fitness in the future? I plan to swim for Puget Sound University for fun and fitness.

How long have you and your family been on the team? I have been on Mesa for ten years.

How old were you when you joined MESA? I was nine years old when I joined Mesa.

What are some of your favorite memories as a Mesa swimmer? I once swam the 200 freestyle without goggles at the old CU swimming pool and will never forget that race. I loved the Friday night team dinners, Water World, Saturday morning McMesa sandwiches and my first day of swim practice when Coach Lauren told me I couldn't wear board shorts to practice.

What has swimming meant to you? It has meant everything to me. Swimming has always been my outlet to address the stress of life. Swimming means peace and relaxation for me, and when I'm in the water, I couldn't be happier.

What are your plans for the fall? Over the next year, I am taking a gap year during which I will serve as an Assistant Coach for the Centaurus Mountain Bike team, will work at Bartlett Arboretum in Belle Plains, KS and hope I can travel at some point. I will attend Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA to major in Manufacturing Engineering in the fall of 2021.

Do you plan to swim for fun or fitness in the future?

I will do both and plan on joining Western Washington's swim club.

MESA ASEM!

From the President

Hi ASEM MESA Families, Not having the 2020 season has certainly left a MESA shaped hole in our hearts. But it's also a little crazy to think that even if we had a season, we'd basically be in the same situation right now. For me, the monotony of COVID life has strangely seemed to make the weeks and months fly by. For us, after spending the first few months away from the pool, my kids have started swimming on their own over the past few weeks. I've heard some other MESA swimmers have also been taking advantage of various swimming opportunities. It's so hard to figure out what's okay and not okay during these crazy times. Hopefully you have received an email regarding small MESA Spirit packs we are hoping to distribute to our swimmers as the summer comes to an end and they start preparing for a new school year. Please let us know if you're around and interested and we'll let you know when we're ready to drop the packs off.

Hope this newsletter finds everyone well!

Best,

Mike
