SAMPLING FROM DIRECTORIES, PHONE BOOKS, ETC

SAMPLING FROM DIRECTORIES, PHONE BOOKS, ETC. - Answers

(Example from p. 223 of an old UC Academic Directory)

Possible sampling strategies

Random numbers between 1 and 5000.

-not practical to identify each person by number

Sample entire pages

-big cluster effect

Sample pages, then columns within selected pages, then take all in a column

-still a big cluster effect

General strategy to use

3 random numbers per selection:

-page number (1-400?)

-column number (1-3)

-line number (1-82) or person number (1-?)

-not clear what the maximum number of persons is

-there will be some blanks in either case

Examples: What person do we select with the following selections?

-pick column 2, line 6

Fritz, Jo Ann -- 1 line entry

-pick column 2, line 8

2nd line of entry for Fritz, Kathleen

need a rule: only 1st counts, otherwise blank

-pick column 3, name 3

Fruscione, Antonella

-pick column 3, name 35

-only 32 names in this column -- a blank

-need to set max names big

-can't avoid blanks
