No. 266 July 2013

Programs and Workshops Bethanne Nemesh/Nancy Skok

Programs:

Please join us in July for a low key and fun nite. We will have two programs going on. For those interested, we will be doing a back to basics round robin night. Carole Whaling will be going over some basis relating to squaring up, using rotary cutters accurately, pressing tips, and blocking. Sharon Yurkanin will be doing block basics, covering some of the blocks that make up the foundation of piecing such as half square triangles as well as mastering that pesky 1/4" seam. Bethanne Nemesh will be doing double duty. First, she will be going over borders...attaching and measuring them, avoiding wavy borders and mitering borders. These 3 tables will be in 15 minute sessions. Once they are over, Bethanne will do a 4th table for those interested in binding tips, straight grain, bias, French seams, and possibly some specialty borders like prairie points.

For those not interested in the round robin, tables will be set up for a Bring Your Own Project zone.

As a separate issue...it is hard to book "big" names at the last minute...so we are looking at who to bring in for 2015 and 2016 now. Please email Bethanne at with any special requests. Generally we can afford 2 or maybe 3 of the more popular speakers per year, so it is possible you may get your favorite!

Workshops:

August 6 and 7 from 9 to 3 both days, Jane Sassaman, “Bountiful Bouquets” $75 members.

There are still a few seats for Jane Sassaman's Bountiful Bouquets 2 day workshop on August 6 and 7th. These will be from 9 to 3 or 4pm on both Tuesday before the meeting and on Wednesday. Please go to and visit her workshop page to get the supply list, which will include your machine with extension cords, fusible, fabrics and irons. We need 5 workshop participants to bring full size iron and ironing boards.

This workshop will teach Jane's fusible machine appliqué technique, broderie perse collage and Jane's extensive design expertise!.

Raffle Quilt Creation Bethanne Nemesh

Again many thanks to those who've helped make the quilt. It is in final assembly now, soon to be quilted.

Words of Wisdom Regarding Sewing Crazy Quilter

by the Crazy Quilter

I have wasted much time looking for sewing related quotations on the internet. My intention one day is to write on a quilt in calligraphy, some of my favorites. I’ll share with you what I found recently…

“Methinks it is a token of healthy and gentle characteristics, when women of high thoughts

and accomplishments love to sew; especially as they are never more at home with their own

hearts than while so occupied.” Nathaniel Hawthorne

“I keep my end tables full of needlework and quilting so I don't have to dust them.”  Author Unknown

“The only place where housework comes before needlework is in the dictionary.” Mary Kurtz

“From the manner in which a woman draws her thread at every stitch of her needlework, any other woman can surmise her thoughts.” Honore de Balzac

“After all, a woman didn't leave much behind in the world to show she'd been there. Even the children she bore and raised got their father's name. But her quilts, now that was something she could pass on.” Sandra Dallas

“Women derive a pleasure, incomprehensible to the other sex, from the delicate toil of the needle.” Nathaniel Hawthorne

“I am certain that a sewing machine would relieve as much human suffering as a hundred Lunatic Asylums, and possibly a good deal more.” Margaret Atwood

“Take your needle, my child, and work at your pattern; it will come out a rose by and by.  Life is like that - one stitch at a time taken patiently and the pattern will come out all right like the embroidery.” Oliver Wendell Holmes

“Her needlework both plain and ornamental was excellent, and she might have put a sewing machine to shame.”  James Edward Austen-Leigh, about Jane Austen

“Useful and ornamental needlework, knitting, and netting are capable of being made, not only sources of personal gratification, but of high moral benefit, and the means of developing in surpassing loveliness and grace, some of the highest and noblest feelings of the soul.”  Author unknown

“Good friends are like quilts - they age with you yet never lose their warmth.”  Author Unknown

“In Seattle you haven't had enough coffee until you can thread a sewing machine while it's running.”  Jeff Bezos

“Veni, Vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.” unknown

From the President

Julie Borden

Happy summer Quilters…

When you read this we will be at the half way point of summer and getting ready for my favorite quilt show…Hershey. I look forward to this show every year and this year I am excited about the thought of walking through the show without hip or back pain – finally!

My friend Lisa Bongean, who spoke to us on “Working with Wool”, will be at Hershey this year. She has been trying to get to the Hershey show for years. She will have a booth and will be teaching some classes. If you see her let her know that you are one of the Crazy Quilters from Allentown. She has fond memories of her visit with us.

Our June meeting with Karen Kay Buckley was great. What a talented woman we had the privilege of meeting! I did not take the workshop and have been regretting it. I have heard many good things about it. We are so lucky to have such an impressive line-up of speakers - and for only $25.00 a year!

I attended a quilt symposium this past month and learned a lot about what other guilds do and how they run. We are truly fortunate that we have meetings that expose us to so many talented quilters and so many new ideas. The reason we are able to have these great programs is that our raffle quilt is always outstanding and we are able to sell so many tickets. Those funds go directly to support our program budget.

The committee recently met and came up with a new idea that we will try in the new year.  Stay tuned for Sept. when we will tell you about it.

Also, any members interested in joining the committee for the following year please contact either me or anyone of the existing members.

Challenge Jane Grove

Old MacDonald's widow went to her local farmers' market.  There she met up with The Farmer in the Dell.  New idea?  Did she decide to open a "Dell-i"?  Remember -- she is a 32 year old buxom blond.

For our Veterans

While you're on your vacation this summer, don't forget to save any unused toiletries for the Vets at the Wilkes Barre Hospital. Thanks to all who've brought me stamps. Remember that stamps for wounded Vets should have 1/4" of envelope left around them. I'll be glad to cut them to size. No torn or heavily cancelled stamps please.

Hospitality Jackie Leipert djleipert@

Thank you the Julie Mc Donell and her committee, Karen Landis, Diane Pesola, Diana Campbell, Linda Herman and Jackie Leipert for the delicious refreshments at our July meeting.

I will be the coordinator for August's volunteers who will be Irene Oehmke, Pat Haberle, Kathryn Heffrich, Karen Hartzell and Becky Marx.

Our September meeting with its Anniversary Potluck Supper is fast approaching.  Everyone is asked to bring a food item (protein, pasta, fruit, vegetable, dessert, or drink).  Plugging in pots is discouraged for safety reasons. We have tablecloths but our tradition has been to bring our own place settings and to make individual tables more festive, flower arrangements for the table.  Put on your thinking caps as to what you will prepare and sign up to bring your specialty at our next month's meeting.  Thanks.

As guild members we need sell our share of tickets and we also need to help out with selling tickets at the shows throughout the year.

Please plan to hop on board and sign up to sell tickets to at least one event this coming year.

It’s a great excuse to go to the shows too!

There will be many opportunities but our first chance is coming up at the Oaks quilt show, Sept 19-22. We need to white glove and sell tickets all four days of the show. Some of the slots have been filled but there are still openings. Please sign up at the July meeting or email me your requested dates and times. I will gladly add you to the schedule.

Please note that we will be having a board meeting on July 30th.

Looking forward to seeing you at our July meeting for our Annual Ice Cream Social and our Round Robin.
