Photography Tips and Requirements

It is true that a good picture is worth a thousand words and we hope that these simple guidelines will help you capture the spirit of Make May Purple.

Composition

• If your picture has people in it then make sure they are making eye contact with the camera.

• Always try and get as close as possible to the person, people or object you are photographing. It is much more interesting to see the expression on people’s faces.

• Avoid group shots of people posing in a row or sat around a table – these often have no clear focal point and people looking at the photograph won’t be drawn in. Instead, try and get pictures of people interacting with each other – close ups of faces or activities – of people laughing, talking or enjoying an activity.

Lighting

• Make sure there is enough light on your subject.

• Avoid taking a picture of someone with the sun or a bright light behind them – this can result in very dark shadows.

Clarity

• Make sure your photos are sharp and clear. Your main subject must be in focus and keep the camera steady.

Resolution

• If you are using a digital camera, make sure it is set to take high resolution pictures (at least 1MB/300dpi), this will greatly improve the quality of the picture. If the resolution setting is too low when the picture is taken, it will not be possible to use the image for professional printing or on our website.

• Your photographs should be either JPG or TIFF files.

• Often photographs taken on some mobile phones are not suitable for us to use.

• Sometimes sending in a printed photo will result in a better quality picture than emailing us a digital image. However, only photos that have been printed out in a local camera shop like Jessops or an online photo shop like Snapfish tend to be suitable. If you print photos out on your home printer we often won’t be able to use them.
