What is conjunctivitis? Conjunctivitis (pink eye) is an infection of the eye and eyelid lining. It is most often caused by a virus but can also be caused by bacteria.

How does a person get conjunctivitis? Conjunctivitis is very contagious and spreads easily and quickly from person to person. People can get conjunctivitis by coming into contact with the tears or discharge from the eyes of an infected person and then touching their own eyes.
How long does it take to develop conjunctivitis following exposure? First symptoms occur 1 to 3 days after exposure, but are also dependent on what type of organism is causing the symptoms (virus or bacteria)
How is conjunctivitis treated? The treatment for conjunctivitis depends on the cause. Your health care provider can advise you on treatment options.
How long is a child with conjunctivitis excluded from childcare? Children are excluded from the classroom if they have a fever, behavior change, or unable to avoid touching eyes. Antibiotics are not required for return.
