The Audition Process

Auditions for the CAPA 6-8 Vocal Department include singing a song to be chosen from a list of songs to be selected by the student. A hard copy of the required audition songs can be downloaded from the Vocal Music Department website: Students can chose from the following songs: There’s a Little Wheel a Turnin’ in My Heart, an Appalachian folk song, and Scarborough Fair, an English folk song. The applicant will perform pitch recognition exercises and vocal exercises.

By the fall of the eighth grade year, vocal music students will be required to audition and take a theory entrance exam for the high school program through the juried review process. This process will begin at the end of the seventh grade year. The juried review requires that the student audition from the same list of songs required of new students applying for admission to the high school program. The songs for high school audition can also be found at the Vocal Music Department: .

CAPA Voice Department 6-8 Cohort

The CAPA Voice Department is dedicated to instilling an attitude of respect and professionalism at a young age. The 6-8 vocal music program prepares students in the art of singing and music literacy; helping students to develop a healthy vocal technique while reinforcing both performance and music theory, in preparation for the next step in their musical training. The Voice Department also offers a variety of courses and unique opportunities for its students, through on-going partnerships between various organizations within, and outside of, the Pittsburgh Cultural District.

Under the tutelage of instructors from the educational and professional musical community of Pittsburgh, voice students in the 6-8 grades have many exciting opportunities to develop their vocal skills, while applying those skills in performance organizations such as: the Treble choir (for 6th grade only), the 7-8 Concert Choir, and in the Madrigal Choir. These performance opportunities provide rich fundamental training that will subsequently lead to further applications of those skills as they transition to the more advanced performance opportunities in CAPA high school. In fact, during the 2010-2011 school year, a couple of middle school students had the opportunity of singing lead roles with the 9-12 Concert Choir in their choral rendition of the musical, Les Miserables.
