Northeast Region Notes
Lesson 1
• The Northeast is the smallest region in the United States.
• The Northeast has many landforms including mountains, plateaus, and plains.
• The largest group of mountains in the Northeast are the Appalachian Mountains.
• The Appalachian Trail is the longest marked footpath in the world. It stretches from Maine to Alabama.
• The Appalachians were formed millions of years ago and shaped by glaciers. The glaciers rounded the mountains through years of erosion and weathering.
• As glaciers moved south in the Northeast, they dug giant holes in the ground which filled with water and became lakes
• Many people anchor their ships in harbors because they are sheltered and ships are safe from storms
• Many factories were built in the Northeast because of the large amount of rivers.
• Rivers were used to produce power, which helped the textile mills manufacture goods such as shoes, tools, clothes and furniture.
• The Northeast region has many forests because of the large amount of precipitation each year.
• Trees were a valuable resource for Native Americans and European settlers because they were used to build homes, canoes, ships, and for fuel
• The Northeast forests have two kinds of leaves: Needleleaf and Broadleaf.
• Climate affects tourism in the Northeast. Cold weather- ski resorts. Warm weather- beaches.
• The Northeast has 4 seasons.
Lesson 2
• Four natural resources found in the Northeast are: soil, trees, water and rocks and stones.
• Some other natural resources found in the Northeast are coal and foods such as fish, crabs, and lobsters
• Before factories were built, people had to make almost everything they needed themselves
• Some examples of service jobs are firefighters and police, mailmen and teachers
• The area from Boston, Massachusetts to Washington, DC is considered a megalopolis
• The growth of large cities such as New York, Boston and Philadelphia has increased the population in suburbs surrounding these cities.
Lesson 3
• The first people in the Northeast were the Native Americans
• There is a mixture of cultures in the Northeast do to immigration
• Immigrants from around the world come to the Northeast looking for a better life
• Many people show pride in their culture by having festivals
