Professor Soil and Land Management, Agronomy, and Plant Nutrition

2000-Present. South Dakota State University.

Associate Professor 1995-2000

Assistant Professor 1990-1995

Applied Research

Research responsibilities include determining the crop nutrient and production factors which limit grain yields (maize, soybeans, winter and spring wheat) and forage yield (alfalfa); conducting field research toward solving problems associated with soil and nutrient management of crops growing in different tillage, fertilizer placement, and crop row spacing systems, assisting with the calibrating soil test extractants with soil testing procedures, as well as production associated with forestry soils and the biofuels industry (ethanol production from grain and cellulosic fuel stocks).

Teaching

Develop and deliver a curriculum for teaching an undergraduate course in Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrient Management (PRAG-423), Principles of Geology (PS-243), Natural Resources of South Dakota Lab (PS-244), as well as a graduate course in Soil N, P, and K and research Methodology (PS-744). The undergraduate course includes student participation in a computer-training program to assist them in learning management aspects of site-specific farming. Other teaching responsibilities include assisting in the development and team-teaching Global Food Systems (ABS 203), a graduate course in field experimentation (PS-792). I also advise undergraduate students in course selection, career direction, and personal mentoring.

Additional Skills

- Working knowledge and experience with important soil test methodologies (pH, organic matter, nitrate-N, extractable ortho-P and K, extractable heavy metals. Working knowledge with calibration of plant nutrient responses and nutrient soil test levels in greenhouse and field environments (Post Doctoral Experience at Texas A&M University 1985-1989). Post-Doctoral Report: Comparison of Bray-1 and Olsen P methods to ammonium acetate-EDTA methods using maize and wheat crops as calibrators.
