Activity 5.2.1 Dissecting a Name

Activity 5.2.1 – Dissecting a NamePurposeBeing able to use the process of classification to determine the genus and species name for plants is a skill all plant producers need in order to demonstrate to customers an understanding of plants and to be able to select a plant for a specific zone or location. Genera and species’ names are usually very descriptive of anatomical or other features about the plant. To help you learn nomenclature, you will create a classification chart for identifying different trees found in your area, identify the genus and species for the tree, and compare that tree to the scientific name of other trees.MaterialsPer pair of students:Computer with Internet access(10) Different tree leavesLarge poster paperColored markers or pencilsPer student:PencilAgriscience NotebookProcedureYou and a partner will examine 10 tree leaves and note characteristics for each. Using the Arbor Day website, you will identify the species of tree the leaves came from and learn about the scientific name for each.Part 1 – Identifying Leaf FeaturesYour teacher will assign you with a partner. You and your partner will determine six characteristics you could use to identify the 10 species of trees based upon the leaf specimens that you have been given. Refer to Presentation Notes from Lesson 4.4 Leave it Leaves for leaf characteristics. Use Table 1 to record your information.Table 1 Tree Leaf CharacteristicsTree#Leaf Characteristics Categories12345678910Part 2 – Determining the Scientific NameYou and your partner will use the Internet to find the scientific name for each tree listed in Table 1.Go the Arbor Day Foundation website: upon from where your tree species is located, select “Begin the Identification” for either the Eastern or Western region of the United States.Use the Arbor Day Foundation website to identify each of the tree leaves you listed in Table 1.Record the genus and species for each leaf specimen in Table 2.Use the genus and species name to determine the rest of the classification from the U. Below each picture, add the name of the tree illustrated by the picture.Present your assigned tree to the class. Explain the reasoning behind why you believe the name was created for the tree you presented.ConclusionExplain why the leaf categories you created in Table 1 were or were not helpful to you for identifying the 10 species of trees.Using Table 2, which two plants were most similar to each other based upon their name? Explain why.Using Table 2, which two plants were least similar to each other based upon their name? Explain why. What do genera and species’ names tell us about plants? Provide an example of a name and its meaning. ................
