POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position: Plastic Mold Machine Operator

Department: Hinge

Reports to: Assembly Supervisor

Job Purpose

Set up and operate plastic mold machine, stud machines, oven, and scale in the production of quality parts consistent with production schedules.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Set up automatic and manual plastic mold machines in accordance with prescribed specifications. Place dies on proper location, making all necessary connections and remove dies for necessary repair.

2. Set up stud machines in accordance with prescribed specifications to adjust rail

rail heights and to adjust airflow.

3. Set up oven in accordance with prescribed specifications.

4. Set up scale by weighing parts into quantities of 1000.

5. Inspect parts after each set-up and then according to inspection frequency, to

insure a complete molding without flash, and studs without rings.

6. Perform computer operations such as reporting and receiving pieces, finding

locations, transferring parts, and making shop orders, labels, and wip cards.

7. Perform simple maintenance, including die repair when appropriate. This

includes the tearing down, cleaning with solvent, installing new pins, re-greasing,

and re-installing new dies. This may include installation of thermocouples and

heating bands, and replacing nozzles when needed.

8. Conduct preventative maintenance every week for all five machines to insure

machine is running efficiently.

9. Evaluate machine efficiency by recording uptime, how the machine performs,

and average run efficiency.

10 Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received

Under regular supervision, normal tasks are spot-checked on a regular basis. Assignments are specific, approach to method is at least suggested, incumbent uses standardized, established procedures and methods to complete tasks.

Problem Solving and Decision Making

Assesses acceptable quality of parts produced and materials used in process and makes machine adjustments accordingly. Determines when to change machine over to keep up with shop orders, when to start machine, when to order supplies. Determines if machine problems require more than minor maintenance. Keep machine running efficiently to maintain rate of production. Errors in judgment usually detected in subsequent steps.

Relations with Others

Interacts with Leads and Coordinators from Assembly and Punch Press and occasionally with Engineering personnel. Incumbent may participate in small group activities such as task teams, safety meetings and other improvement efforts.

Equipment Operated

Manual plastic mold machine, automatic plastic mold machine, brackers, snap stud machine, automatic and manual sprue grinder, hand tools and measuring instruments. Moderate care required preventing damage to dies and equipment. Does preventive maintenance and basic repairs.

Working Conditions and Hazards

Exposure to hazards of machine operation. Occasional release of fumes from melted plastic if machine malfunctions or proper procedures not followed. Exposure to chemicals and solvents. Uniform safety practices consist of safety shoes, safety glasses and other devices as required.

Physical Effort Required

Standing and sitting with close visual attention and manual dexterity required. Frequent lifting of dies and pans of parts of moderate weight. Bending, stretching and leaning required.

Learning Period

To learn the basics of this job requires two to four weeks. To handle all aspects of the job with minimum supervision would take to six to twelve months.

Qualifications

Skills/Abilities: Mechanical aptitude to use small hand tools. Must be motivated.

Training and Experience: Knowledge of parts and machine operation, which can be learned, on the job.
