UNL recognizes Distinguished Scholars of 2007

Lincoln, Neb., Nov. 16, 2007 -- The University of Nebraska-Lincoln recognized top Nebraska high school seniors for their academic excellence Oct. 30 at the 2007 Omaha World-Herald Recognition Dinner. These distinguished scholars have demonstrated a high level of ability and a strong commitment to superior performance in academics as indicated by their class ranking, combined with their ACT or SAT test scores. All Nebraska National Merit semifinalists, National Hispanic Scholars and National Achievement Scholars were also recognized.

In addition to sponsoring the recognition dinner, the World-Herald sponsors two of the most prestigious and financially rewarding scholarships that UNL awards. John Gottschalk, president and chief executive officer of the World-Herald, presented Corey Drvol and Lauren Beitel, two UNL freshmen, with this year's award of World-Herald Honored Scholars.

Drvol is a National Merit scholar and graduate of Omaha Skutt High School. He majors in pre-physical therapy and is active in the University Honors Program and serves on the Honors Program Council. He plans to attend physical therapy school.

Beitel is a National Merit scholar and graduate of Lincoln East High School. She majors in biochemistry. She is involved in the University Honors Program, NU Meds Club, Biochemistry Club and the Scarlets dance team. She plans to attend medical school.

The World-Herald Recognition Dinner at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Lincoln culminated an entire day of events for the Distinguished Scholars. The Distinguished Scholars Day gives students the opportunity to learn more about the academic programs offered at UNL through the University Honors Program. Students and parents also join in on a Creation of Knowledge Tour where they get a glimpse of research and other academic opportunities for undergraduate students. They learned about undergraduate research, fine and performing arts and engineering. All students interacted in small seminar classes on subjects including ethics in business, history, language and images, philosophy, photojournalism, biotechnology, political science, management and chemistry.
