Fingerless Gloves - Hither and Yarn

Fingerless Gloves on Straight Needles:

“Universal Pattern” by Cathy Ryan

Also called wristwarmers or handwarmers, these can be worn solo for cool weather, or over thinner regular gloves in cold weather. Light fingerless gloves also are handy for indoor use for those who suffer from cold hands while reading, watching TV, using the computer or knitting. I like mine for bike riding; my husband wears his to play guitar; my daughters wear theirs inside and out just because they like the way they look!

Yarn: Wool/natural fiber blend preferable for its resiliency, acrylic OK

Worsted or lighter weight best (gauge 20 or more stitches/4 inches)

About 50g of yarn should be enough for most gloves (often 1 skein); heavier yarns or large gloves may require more. For indoor gloves, I would suggest a lightweight or sock yarn (24-32 stitches/4 inches).

Needles: Use the size recommended on the yarn ball band or 1-2 sizes smaller. Straight or circular needles can be used (worked back and forth).

Directions:

Take the stitch gauge per 4 inches of your preferred yarn and double it. (Example: for worsted weight, 20 stitches/4 inches, double to 40.)

For a MEDIUM/LARGE (looser woman’s or man’s glove), round to the nearest multiple of 4 and add 2, and this will be your number to cast on. (Example: 42). For a SMALL/MEDIUM (smaller woman’s or youth glove), subtract 10% of stitches and round to the nearest multiple of four (Example: 40 – 4 = 36, + 2 == 38)

Basic glove:

Cast on calculated number of stitches loosely.

Pattern stitch:

Slip first stitch as if to knit; then knit 2, purl 2 to last stitch; knit last stitch.

Repeat to desired length of glove. Cast off in pattern.

Sew together: bring selvage stitches together, sew top 1 ¼ inches, leave a gap of 1 ¼ inches, and sew rest of seam to bottom of glove. Weave in ends.

Variation: To help identify bottom of glove, you may knit first 4 rows in garter stitch (knit every stitch). Also, if you do have two balls of yarn, note that you can knit both gloves at one time on one needle for efficiency.
