The Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification examination will be updated on 31 August  2011, as a result of the recent Role Delineation Study (RDS). The PMP® RDS is the foundation on which this professional certification is based. Learn more about the RDS.

What do I need to know about the changes to the PMP certification and examination?

These updates to the role do have an effect on the PMP examination questions and process areas in the PMP examination application starting 31 August 2011.  Regular communications about this change will continue until the PMP examination change on 31 August. There is no change of the PMBOK Guide® related to this examination change.

Where can I find PMP update resources?

• You can access a complimentary electronic copy of the PMP Examination Content Outline, formerly titled the PMP Examination Specification, to read information about the content of the updated PMP examination that goes into effect on 31 August.

• Recently, the PMP Examination Content Outline has been updated as a result of feedback received by the project management community. Two tasks, Domain 2/Task 10 and Domain 3/Task 5, were updated to reflect an inconsistency in language. These updates are reflected in the updated PMP Examination Content Outline.

• If you need to communicate about the PMP update within your organization or community, be prepared by reading our frequently asked questions (FAQs).

What if I want to take the current version of the PMP examination?

Schedule your examination at a Prometric testing center prior to 31 August.

What if I am preparing for the new version of the examination?

Please be sure to schedule your examination at a Prometric testing center on/after 31 August.

The recent RDS has provided updates to the PMP examination questions and process areas within the PMP examination application:

Delivery of Exam Results

• As we transition to the new examination, PMI must update its examination reporting processes. This means for a short period of time examination results will not be available immediately following the examination. There will be a 4–6 week period between taking the examination and receiving the results via email.

• All candidates who take the updated examination on/after 31 August will not receive immediate results at the Prometric testing center.

• All candidates can expect to receive their examination results by mid-October.

• Once PMI validates the new examination structure, we will be able to resume providing individuals with immediate results at the Prometric testing center.

• Each PMP candidate will receive a communication to notify them when their

results are available at .

Changes to the Application

• For candidates who are getting ready to apply for the PMP, the application will be updated to reflect the current role of the project manager revealed in the new RDS.

▪ In the past, PMI has required candidates to track and report their hours of experience leading and directing projects for each task within the RDS.

▪ On 31 August, PMI will update the PMP application to require candidates to track and report their hours for each domain (process group) within the RDS.

▪ Any candidates who have an application in progress at the time the change is made will have their experience hours migrated to the new application, so that no data is lost.

PMI’s Policy Regarding Natural Disasters

PMI understands that there are times when extenuating circumstances may prevent you from meeting a scheduled examination appointment, resulting in a no-show status. Such extenuating circumstances can include:

• Medical emergency,

• Military deployment,

• Death in immediate family,

• Illness in immediate family, or

• Natural disaster.

Should a situation like this occur, you will be asked to provide an explanation along with supporting documentation (e.g. accident report, medical documentation, death certificate.) More information on extenuating circumstance can be found in the PMP Handbook.

Specifically in the event of inclement weather, PMI will consider this an extenuating circumstance when:

1. The Prometric test center closes. In the event of a Prometric Test Center closing, Prometric will contact candidates and work with individuals to reschedule their exam date.

2. A federal, state or local state of emergency is declared.

We are sensitive to those who might be impacted by a natural disaster. PMI does have contingency plans for those who are unable to make it to their examination appointment due to the factors outlined above and will work with the specific candidates affected to ensure they are able to test on the version of the exam they expect.

If you have further questions, please review the PMP Handbook and contact Customer Care.

The Project Management Professional (PMP)® credential examination will be revised in 2011, based on updates to the professional role of a PMP® credential holder recently found by PMI’s Role Delineation Study (RDS).

PMI conducts a role delineation study for the PMP credential every five to seven years to ensure the credential reflects contemporary practice, evolves to meet current needs in the profession, and to comply with the PMP credential’s accreditation against the ISO 17024 standard.

Exam Changes

Project managers pursuing the credential or preparing for the exam in the upcoming year should be aware that approximately 30 percent of the PMP exam will change.

As a result of the RDS, certain areas of the examination will be tested in a different way because an existing Domain was seen to be common across all content areas of the examination. Specifically, the Professional and Social Responsibility content area (Domain 6) will now be tested in every domain rather than as a separate domain on the examination. The recognition obtained through the RDS is that professional and social responsibility is integrated into all of the work of project management. PMI’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct should therefore be viewed as now integrated into the day-to-day role of a project manager, emphasizing its importance in each phase of the project lifecycle.

However, education and experience eligibility requirements for the PMP credential will not change.

The new examination is scheduled to be released on 31 August 2011. This means that the last day to take the current PMP exam is 30 August 2011. Candidates who would like to take the current version of the examination are advised to schedule early to better ensure that they are able to obtain a test date before the update.

Wide Participation Helps Ensure That RDS Reflects Contemporary Practice

The changes in the PMP exam reflect the maturity of the role as defined in the RDS. More than 3,000 PMP credential holders from 97 countries were involved in the process of updating the role.

RDS effort. These volunteers represented project managers from every global region, as well as

diversity in industry, job roles and other demographics.

PMI started the eight-month RDS process in late 2009, working with Professional Examination Services, a third-party with expertise in this process, to complete the study.

Michella Dantas, PMI-RMP, PMP, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil served as the PMP representative for the Role Delineation Study Steering Committee. She noted that “The process as conducted by PMI brings high value, as it involves a wide diversity of experienced professionals coming from different business areas and countries who can bring to the table their views on how the profession is evolving and what might have to reviewed as far as knowledge, skills and abilities.”Ms. Dantas also participated in the PMP Role Delineation Study in 2004.

“Because it provides timely recalibration of the certification requirements with the experiences of global project managers across a wide array of project types, sizes, industries and complexities; the RDS ensures that PMP [credential holders] can measure and chart their own development based on internationally accepted criteria,” said task force team member Grace E. Solas PMP, of Jamaica. “By doing this, a PMP should always have a distinct advantage toward providing value adding services to their employers.”

“Project management is still is not as easily recognized [as some older professions. An RDS], makes the role of clearer and shows the difference between a skilled technical specialist and a skilled project manager,” said Sergey Rakovskiy, PMP, of Moscow, Russia, who served on the RDS task force.

“By performing an in-depth look at the current PMP [exam] and comparing it to what project managers in the ‘real world’ are doing, a role delineation study results in a more meaningful credential,” said task force participant Julie Paradise, MSM, PMP, East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, USA.

“In a world that’s so dynamic, it is important [for a project manager] to have fresh information in order to adapt to many circumstances. The Role Delineation Study helps project managers to be sure that the information that is shared with them is updated based on the experience that other project managers have faced in daily work. Conducting a role delineation study gives a huge amount of certainty that the project management practices are adaptable to the current markets,” said task force member Gabriel Perez Huesca, PMP, of Puebla City, Mexico.

To reflect exam modifications, PMI has created and released a new PMP Exam Content Outline that will replace the current PMP® Examination Specification. Find more information online about the RDS or related examination changes.

The PMP role delineation study

PMI conducts a role delineation study (RDS) for the Project Management Professional (PMP)® credential every five to seven years to ensure the credential reflects contemporary practice and evolves to meet current needs in the profession, and to comply with the PMP’s accreditation under the ISO 17024 standard.

Why the RDS is important

The RDS enables PMI to identify the most current and critical elements of the professional practice of project management. This ensures that the credential examinations continue to assess what is most relevant in the day-to-day work of project managers.

In the global marketplace, the PMP credential’s accreditation under ISO 17024 provides a distinctive differentiation — and this accreditation also requires that we conduct the RDS.

How the PMP is affected

The latest results of the RDS produced an updated description of the professional role of a PMP. The responses met the requirements for statistical relevancy and adequately reflected the profession in geography, industry and other standard demographics. We collected feedback from more than 3,000 PMP credential holders from 97 countries, representing all organizational levels.

The RDS results provide us with a blueprint for updating the credential:

• The education and experience eligibility requirements for the existing PMP examination remain appropriate and will not be changed.

• Approximately 30% of the PMP exam content will change.

• Certain examination areas will be tested in a different way. Specifically, the Professional and Social Responsibility content area (Domain 6) will now be tested in every domain, rather than as a separate domain. The RDS revealed that professional and social responsibility is integrated into all of the work of project management. Therefore, PMI’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct should be viewed as integrated into the day-to-day role of a project manager and important in each phase of the project lifecycle.

If you would like to know more about the process PMI used for conducting the RDS, please refer to Appendix A in the PMP Examination Content Outline.

Who Participated in the RDS

• Over 3,000 PMP credential holders participated by providing guidance in the formulation of the changes to the role, refining this content, and participating in the validation survey.

• Participants represented each of the four geographic regions:
